Zoom Bible Study on the second half of the Book of Isaiah

When: Thursdays, May 14-June 25
Time: 7:00pm-8:30pm
Why is it important to look deeply into the Book of Isaiah?
Whereas the first part of the Book of Isaiah focused on the cruelty and oppression of the people by the rulers and God's justice upon them, the second part of the book focuses on God's mercy and forgiveness.  In early Christianity, it was held in such high regard as to be called "the Fifth Gospel." Furthermore, its influence extends beyond Christianity to English literature and to Western culture in general, from the libretto of Handel's Messiah to well-known phrases as "swords into ploughshares"  and "voice in the wilderness."
Please join Pastor Christie as we learn more about this influential book together noting how much it impacted Jesus and the Gospel writers.  Join by sending an email to Christie by May 7th.

It is natural to feel fear, anxiety, grief, and worry during and after a disaster. Everyone reacts differently, and your own feelings will change over time. Faith Community Nurse Vicki Keilhauer will address these mental health topics in a 5-week series of articles.

Addressing Mental Health Series:
Easing Fear During the Pandemic

Shirah Vollmer MD, a psychiatrist at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA says we often try to master knowledge to diminish fear. During this pandemic, we may think the more knowledge we can obtain about the virus, the less fearful we will become. Unfortunately, this may lead us to become media obsessed. Knowing this, we need to dose the news according to how much we can handle at any one time, without feeling the compulsion to hear more and more news. Like any other compulsion, each individual has to find the source and the amount of news which suits his or her brain and ability to handle distressing and shocking news without becoming a compulsive media consumer.
Prescription for 'easing fear’:

1. Limit the amount of time reading or watching things which cause you distress.
2. Limit social media engagement around the coronavirus, as the information there is often not scientifically verified. Consider which sites are adding to your mental well-being and which are not. Delete the sites that are increasing your stress.
3. Decide on a specific time to check in with the news. The morning is better than the evening. About 20 minutes of news while eating breakfast gives a stop/start structure.
4. Stay informed with trusted sources of information, such as the CDC and local health department.
5. Accept that the news coverage will not answer all your questions or address all your worries. Accept uncertainty. Trust that officials around the globe and the medical community are trying their best to address the situation.
6. The virus will not necessarily take the same course in the U.S. as it has in other countries. It’s important to think critically about the information provided and not jump to conclusions.
7. Consume only what you need to know, what’s most relevant to you and particularly what is happening or anticipated in your own community.
