UUFB Virtual (and Actual) Office Hours

In this time, we’re adjusting office hours and schedules drastically! As we’ve noted elsewhere, for the time being Rev. Lori and Nick are working from home. They will both be in the UUFB office on Wednesday mornings. This allows us to process mail received at our P.O. Box and do anything else that needs to happen on our campus. If you send your pledge payment via the post office, please send it to the P.O. Box! We do NOT receive mail sent to our street address.

    UUFB
    P.O. Box 593
    Beaufort, SC 29901

Rev. Lori will still take Monday as her Sabbath day. She will be generally available for phone calls Tuesday through Friday, except when participating in Zoom meetings for UUFB or her continuing education classes. She will be checking in with members via phone and email as her schedule permits, as well as continuing the spiritual practices that help keep her grounded. You can reach her at her cell number, which is in the directory (in the Members Only section of the UUFB website: uubeaufort.org).

Nick will be generally available to UUFB members from noon to 5pm on Monday through Thursday, and will check email daily. He can be reached at his cell number, which has been listed in the directory for the duration of these changes.

All the Colors! All the Flowers!

It’s almost time for our annual Flower Communion service! While we may not be able to meet in person, we can still celebrate flowers and our UUFB community!

Here’s what I need: Photos of flowers, lots of them!

If you have some pictures on your phone’s camera roll, or your tablet or laptop, please choose a handful and email them to me. I’ll be combining photos and some music together for a video to show during the Flower Communion service (like the “images of Jesus” video you saw during the Easter service).

Flowers can be perfect, or ragged, cultivated or wild, even gone to seed. All are beautiful!

I look forward to seeing All the Flowers!

(Jinny Eads has taken some photos of flowers on the UUFB campus – we’re including one and will show different ones in weeks to come.)

Chair Yoga ZOOMING To You!

Yes, our Chair Yoga Class will come to you again this week,  live via ZOOM.   So, pull up a chair, make sure you have downloaded Zoom,  adjust your computer, tablet or phone and join the class.  I would encourage you to sign in a bit earlier than 10:30 to make sure your technology and set up are working well.

We will meet at our regular time:  10:30-11:45 Tuesdays
Here is your link:  https://uuma.zoom.us/j/630127948

Looking forward to seeing you then.  Also, if you know others who might benefit from this class during this stressful time, please feel free to send this message to them and invite them to join the class.

Looking forward to seeing you then.
Kathy Folsom

Coronavirus Prevention!

Your UUFB Care Committee reminds you of the basics:

There is still no vaccine to prevent corona virus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) always recommends everyday preventive actions to help prevent the spread of respiratory diseases, including:

•    If you or a loved one develop symptoms, follow the advice of local health officials regarding when to seek care.
•    Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
•    Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
•    Stay home when you are sick. (And for now, stay home except for necessary trips.)
•    Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
•    Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.
•    Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after using the bathroom, before eating, and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
•    If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Always wash hands with soap and water if hands are visibly dirty.
•    Follow the CDC’s recommendations for using a facemask:
•  The CDC now DOES recommend that people who are well (appear well) wear a facemask to protect themselves and others from COVID-19. Here’s a link for updates on facemasks.
•    Follow local health advice regarding school closures, avoiding crowds, and other social distancing measures. For additional information, visit https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-nCoV/index.html or call 1-800-232-4636.

To Be Continued…
a column by Rev. Lori G. Hlaban

Dear Ones,

Last week I asked people for photos of flowers, for a special slide show for the flower communion. I’ve received a number of photos, and thank you to all who’ve sent some in! And, there’s still room for more! So, if you haven’t yet sent in a photo (or several) of flowers, please do so!

It would also be great to have some photos of our members for this slide show, because – as most of us know – the flower communion is about community! If you have an electronic photo or two of you, you and your partner/family, and would be okay sharing it with the Fellowship, please share!

If you haven’t joined us for a midweek check in, why not give it a try? We start with a reading and chalice lighting, and then check in and have a conversation. Wednesday evening and Friday morning! Links are at the website, the UUFB Beloved Community Forum, and this newsletter.

Something I shared in last week’s check in was a reflection from Rev. Manish Mishra-Marzetti (who is one of the co-editors of last year’s UUA Common Read, Justice on Earth). Mishra-Marzetti’s reflection was published in “Braver/Wiser,” which lands in my email every Wednesday. Anyone can subscribe to “Braver/Wiser!” They’re brief reads, sometimes humorous, always thoughtful, from UU ministers and laypeople. Here’s the link to subscribe.

As I write this, Gov. McMaster has begun allowing some businesses to reopen, and some states are seeing protestors demanding an end to stay-at-home orders. Frankly, as I read it, Gov. McMaster is beginning earlier than SC DHEC is recommending by at least a week. And given the demographics of our congregation, we will probably be holding virtual worship and meetings for at least several more weeks.

Thank you for being here, for being part of this Fellowship, and for staying connected!
I love you. You are beloved and precious. We will get through this. Stay safe, everyone.

    Blessings,
        Rev. Lori Hlaban

From Our Treasurer: Fellowship Finances Update

We are indeed a very generous community and live up to our commitments. Of the $130,091 pledged in our fall 2019 campaign, we have received nearly 50% of our pledges. Shortly you will all be receiving your quarterly statements showing the balance of what you owe for the remainder of the year. We appreciate receiving these during the course of the rest of the year. However, this is not the only source of our income. We have also budgeted another $40,000+ from sources such as Sunday cash collection, non-pledge income, and other fund raisers such as auctions, yard sales, men who cook, etc.

Unfortunately, our world has profoundly changed due to COVID-19. Due to social distancing and not being able to meet as a community our Sunday offering and nod-pledged income has been severely affected. We are also unsure if we will be in a position to hold an effective auction. As such the Financial Advisory committee met to forecast what our financial outlook would be in this environment. Our prognosis is that we expect a shortfall of $11,281. Our expenses are relatively fixed and we do not have much flexibility.

We hope these times will be behind us soon and life can go back to normal. In the meantime we would appreciate if you are able to donate a little more than your pledged amount.

We thank you for your generosity

Kindest regards,
Usman Ismail
Treasurer
