Dam Removal & River Restoration Underway at Bonnie Park in Strongsville

Cleveland Metroparks Project scheduled to continue through 2020

Work started last week to notch the dam and lower the water level behind the dam structure. In addition to removing the dam, work will be completed in the channel to provide stability and enhance habitat.  Additional improvements at the site will improve floodplain connection and wetland quality.  The project is funded through Ohio EPA's Water Resource Restoration Sponsorship Program, with the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District as the local sponsor.

Rocky River Volunteer Water Quality Monitoring Program Temporarily on Hold Due to COVID-19

With the closure of the Cleveland Metroparks facilities where monitoring kits are held, and concerns about disinfecting monitoring equipment between uses, our volunteer monitoring program has been temporarily suspended. The program will resume once we determine it is reasonably safe to do so. We will also schedule an additional training for new volunteers once we are able to resume the program.  In the meantime, I invite prospective volunteers to check out our instructional video on YouTube: https://youtu.be/os2kRBeqYL8.

April is Ohio Native Plant Month

On October 17, 2019, Ohio House Bill 59 came into effect. This bill states: The month of April is designated as ‘Ohio Native Plant Month’ to increase public awareness of Ohio’s native plants and the many benefits they provide to pollinators, Ohio’s economy, and the health of Ohio’s environment.

To commemorate Ohio's first Native Plant Month, LEAP and its partners, including RRWC, will be highlighting a native plant each day. Through its Native Plant of the Year promotion, that has been going on for the last 10 years, LEAP has spotlighted 3 native plants each year. Since the month of April has 30 days, LEAP members decided it was a perfect opportunity to promote one of our native plants each day in April.

You can follow the plants daily on LEAP's Facebook page.

The Rocky River Watershed Council is the only organization dedicated solely to the protection and restoration of the Rocky River and its watershed. But we can't do it alone. You can help us secure a healthy future for the Rocky River by making a donation or becoming a member.
