Little Ship Club of Canterbury

The Little Ship Club of Canterbury is a branch of Naval Point Club Lyttelton. We are a fun group of sailors, who gather on a regular basis to discuss articles of interest, listen to key note speakers and organising events both on and off the water related to our common involvement with the sea and those who sail on it. Everyone is welcome to come along and join in any of our events and activities.

Kia Ora everyone,

I am excited to announce that while our scheduled talk tonight has been postponed until July, we have got the awesome David Kennett doing an online session with us next week.

David and his wife Megan spent 3 months over summer cruising the North Island.  David will talk about the trip including planning, challenges and highlights.  From Cook Strait to Whangaroa in the North exploring New Zealand was a great experience.

Bees Knees is a 34' van de Stadt and they have sailed over 20,000nm in her. David has done a number of sessions with us in the past and his talks are always BRILLIANT, so I would really recommend you tune in.

When: 7:30pm on Thursday 30th April (I suggest joining a few minutes early to sort out technology!)

Hows the lockup going for you? It is great that we have been able to well and truely flatten that curve now. Personally I am REALLY looking forward to next week when we are allowed to go and check on our boats - but not allowed to go sailing yet. Here is the latest re what we can/can't do boating wise.

Did you get a chance last newsletter to check out our end of year accounts and Presidents Report that we missed doing last year. You can
read my Presidents Report here (that I did actually write last year) and the end of year accounts (that I did a few weeks ago).

I didn't get any objections to the re-election of the committee, so I'd like to congratulate my lovely committee Sally-Nina Moore, Willie Newman, Pete & Kathy Jamieson, Tui Scott and John Ashbey on their reappointment!

I also didn't get any objections to my re-election as your esteemed President, so if you're still happy to have me then I'd be honoured to continue.

Single Handed Sailing - Equipment Tips and Experiences
With Tim Bloy's entry to the Solo Trans Tasman race completed he had to complete a 300 nautical mile solo passage on board the family yacht Nelly Rose an X Yacht 412. What better way than sail solo from Fiji back to New Zealand.

Tim joins us to discuss weather forecasting, useful equipment, technology, sleep and watch keeping strategies to ensure a safe and low stress passage from a single handed perspective.

We are hoping this event will go ahead on the 18th June.

Stories from the RNI
The Round North Island two handed yacht race is about to start in Auckland on the 22nd February. Little Ship Club Members Victoria Murdoch and Emily Riley are the only all female and most Southern entry! You can follow their adventures during the race here. They'll be at the Little Ship Club on the 23rd April to share the story of one of the toughest sailing races NZ

We have rescheduled this event to 23 July

Shackleton's Boat Journey
EVENT POSTPONED
The greatest survival story of all time” was the way Sir Edmund Hillary described the heroic journey undertaken by Ernest Shackleton and his captain Frank Worsley (native of Akaroa)  with four others from the crew of the wrecked ship Endurance.

The crossing involved sailing in a converted lifeboat - the James Caird only 7m. long and with no keel across 1200km from Elephant Island to South Georgia.  Sailing over the treacherous and feared southern oceans, dodging icebergs and manoeuvring through 5m waves.

Through the incredible navigational skills of Worsley, whom only got three fleeting glimpses of the sun during the 16 day journey, the crew of six managed somehow to land on the tiny island of South Georgia - on the southern uninhabited side of course, necessitating a horrendous alpine crossing over glaciers and steep mountainous terrain to reach the whaling station at Grytviken and relative safety.

Such was the global interest in polar exploration in the early 20th century, Shackleton and his men were lauded as heroes, inspiring others to try to emulate their achievement.

Of three attempts to try to do what Shackleton and his men had done have been launched, only one succeeded.  British explorer Tim Jarvis, in 2013, in a faithfully built replica of the original James Caird  renamed the Alexandra Shackleton, he completed the exact same journey. The team also used the same 1913 equipment, the same unpalatable food, compass and navigation aids as Shackleton and Worsley had access to. Tim’s book Shackleton’s Epic  is a ‘must read’ to anyone interested in Antarctic exploits.

If anything Tim’s feat reads as grippingly if not more so than the original, as like Shackleton, they struck atrocious conditions as soon as they set off from Elephant Island. They somehow survived the journey without capsizing. They then had various catastrophes beset them after arrival on South Georgia.

Tim has very generously agreed to make the Alexandra Shackleton available to the city of Christchurch, via The Christchurch Foundation, and The Foundation has agreed to locate the boat in Akaroa, believing this to be its spiritual home, given Worsley’s childhood spent here, prior to using his peninsula-taught skills in the world's oceans.

The boat has already been shipped from its last home in Rhode Island USA and will be on display at two events that The Foundation is hosting. One in Christchurch, and one in Akaroa. Tim has graciously agreed to address the attendees with first-hand accounts of his incredible journey in the steps of Shackleton and Worsley.

There will be something quite magical about being able to see, and even touch, the very vessel in which six brave explorers conquered their demons and managed somehow to achieve the almost impossible.

For too long Frank Worsley has not received the proper recognition his feats deserved.  He has also lived in the shadow of Shackleton to the extent that his name is not even mentioned sometimes in coverage of Shackleton's famous exploits.  The truth is that none of the 26 survivors of the Endurance  would have lived to tell their story had it not been for the heroic navigational efforts of Akaroa’s Frank Worsley.

Join us in Akaroa on NEW DATE TO BE ADVISED to meet Tim and the Alexandra Shackleton in person. Tickets are $50 and include a light supper. Purchase tickets online here.
