This week in my Mastermind group the topic of doughnuts came up. But not how you'd expect. It's a new term I learned about that describes an economic model that encourages us to stop thinking about growing, and to start thinking about thriving. (More on that below.) In these wild times the "doughnut model" is a policy Amsterdam has adopted as a way to think about moving beyond crisis mode.

In business speak I've always struggled to understand why businesses are constantly trying to grow, get bigger, and make more money. As a "company of one" I've always wanted to have a business where I can make a good, sustainable, living, while also living the lifestyle I want to lead. I desire a certain balance and harmony over infinite growth, perhaps favoring internal growth over external, societal markers. I've never believed more money means more happiness even though it's rarely what's celebrated.

This week's inspiration kicks off with more on the doughnut:

Read.

Kate Raworth is the English economist who brought doughnut economics to the forefront through her book Doughnut Economics: Seven Ways to Think Like a 21st-Century Economist and TED talk. "The central premise is simple: the goal of economic activity should be about meeting the core needs of all but within the means of the planet. The 'doughnut' is a device to show what this means in practice."

Watch.

In the past week I've not only watched, but I've re-watched "Shine On with Reese" on Netflix where actress Reese Witherspoon interviews powerful, ambitious women across different industries. The interviews are more like chats with friends (and rides in golf carts), and dig into the stories of persistence, overcoming challenges, and the lack of representation and stories that show what really is possible... These are some crazy inspiring journeys and rarely the path that you imagined.

Listen.

Thanks to a Spotify recoomended playlist I discovered Pomplamoose's "Lovely Day / Good as Hell Mashup" and I've had this song on repeat ever since. (I even made my friends dance with me on a Zoom call.) It's a mashup between songs by Bill Withers and Lizzo and it's good fun! Pomplamoose is an American musical duo featuring Jack Conte and Nataly Dawn.

This week you can find me included in these lovely features:

Upcoming Workshops!

  • Make A Map! CreativeMornings virtual FieldTrip on May 6th. This is a repeat workshop of the one I did earlier this month with a couple hundred folks around the world who love maps. You'll need to bring a banana and a napkin. Heads up: spaces go FAST!
  • Write Your Own Rules Workshop – I've already managed to run 4 rounds of my "signature workshop" since lockdown started, and it brings me SO MUCH JOY to see what a rewarding experience it is for participants. In just 2 hours you'll feel inspired + walk away with your own rule book. New dates: May 8 & 9th.
  • Mapping Your Life – NEW workshop (with a special offer) during the ReWilding Virtual Retreat hosted by Jenner Linden of the WildOnes. It's a new offer that mixes my love of maps + supporting people through coaching. I'll be one of 22 virtual workshops during the 11-day completely FREE virtual retreat. The retreat kicks off May 12th, but I don't know what day I'll go live yet... Sign up to receive notifications.

Note: For all workshops, please triple check the timezone listed compared to where you are. My work is taking me around the world, and it's not always listed in the same time zone.
Here's to a week where you THRIVE! 🐞

P.S. My question of the week this week was: What's your favorite (online) event you've attended & why? (So many great responses in the comments!)
