Gill Owen Scholarship Recipient

Congratulations to Old Ignatian, Joel Dignam (Class of 2008) for winning the 2020 Gill Owen Scholarship! Joel is the Founder and Executive Director of Better Renting, a community of renters working together for stable, affordable, and healthy homes. This scholarship supports an individual to travel internationally to research innovative ideas and initiatives that will be relevant to improving outcomes for consumers in the Australian energy market. In the future he intends to visit California to learn about household electrification and the risks and opportunities for vulnerable households and renters.

Remote Learning

"In education you never stop learning, that goes for both students and teachers!" Saint Ignatius' College Teacher and Old Ignatian, Laura Brzezinski (Class of 2005) has adapted the way she delivers classes during the current climate, by adopting an online format. The Staff have been very creative, forming engaging content for our students and it has been a rewarding challenge.

Cookie Kindness

At the end of last term, in a kind and thoughtful gesture, our Parents and Friends Committee showed their gratitude by presenting every member of staff across our three campuses with heart shaped cookies and small chocolate eggs, beautifully presented in individual clear cellophane bags. We thank our P&F Committee for this generous act of kindness on behalf of our entire parent community. We are moved and inspired by the support of our parents during this time of profound change in the daily life of the College.

Ignatian Spirituality

“Churches are not being closed. Buildings are being closed. You are the Church! You are to remain open.” These days of uncertainty invite us to care for each other in the best way we can. Saint Ignatius' College has set up an "Ignatian Spirituality" section on the College Website. This has some Ignatian resources for people at this time with links to online Masses, prayers, wellbeing and other information.

Earth Day

“We are the guardians of creation” – Pope Francis
On 22 April, we celebrated Earth Day. Saint Ignatius' College is blessed to be surrounded by the beauty of our natural environment. The Senior School, in the Adelaide foothills with Black Hill as its backdrop and Fifth Creek lining the perimeter, is surrounded by wildlife and greenery. The Junior School and Ignatian Early Years too are blessed to be situated along Second Creek surrounded by leafy green trees and the eastern suburbs landscape.

Meet the Mentors:

Tim Chia, Class of 2005
Chief Operating Officer, Clayton Church Homes (CCH)

Tim Chia graduated in 2005 and has remained heavily involved with the College. After captaining both Xavier House and the Drive Tennis Team in Years 11 and 12, he founded the Old Ignatians’ Tennis Club in 2008 and remains President. Tim also coached the Drive Team for 10 years, stepping down in 2018.
Tim believes that he owes a large part of his career success as an Executive in the Healthcare Sector to his involvement with the College, which not only provided him with the confidence and skills required to build a successful career, but also his first exposure to mentoring.

Tim recognises Peter Coffey (Principal) as one of his first mentors, noting in particular his passion for learning, ability to instill empathy in others, and his management style that models a balance of discipline and encouragement.
Tim also acknowledges his father, who has previously held State Government CEO roles and is the current Guide Dogs CEO, as one of the people that has helped shape his career.
After completing his university studies in Commerce (Accounting) and Property, Tim commenced his career as an auditor with Nexia Edwards Marshall, before transitioning to senior roles in commercial property and asset management; most recently at Cushman & Wakefield, managing all SA-based commercial assets within the Department of Defence (Cth) Portfolio.
In his current role as Chief Operating Officer at CCH, a provider of Residential Aged Care, Retirement and Home Care Services, Tim has responsibility for Strategy, Property Development & Acquisitions, Facilities & Asset Management, Retirement Living, ICT, Procurement & Contract Management, Sales, Maintenance & Grounds and Hotel Services (Catering, Cleaning & Laundry). Tim has recently led significant growth of the organisation, which now operates 16 sites across Metropolitan SA and the Adelaide Hills, supported by some 500 staff.
