In a world ravaged by COVID-19, we are finding our work to be in demand now more than ever. Handwashing has been particularly identified as an effective way to combat the spread of this pandemic. For effective handwashing, we know that people need clean running water, soap and the knowledge of proper handwashing. Yet baseline data from the areas we work indicates that only 30% of the population are able to practice effective handwashing. We are working with our partners, including County Governments, to ensure that our communities are better equipped to combat COVID-19 through hand washing. We also continue to address challenges leading to waterborne diseases. The bacteria and parasites that cause these diseases have unfortunately not gone on quarantine and are not practising social distancing!

Handwashing for Bomet County

The Governor of Bomet County, H.E Hillary Barchok flagged off our collaboration in Bomet, with the initial contribution from ACK of 153 handwashing stations. These handwashing stations will help Sotik Prison, 48 health facilities and 40 people with disabilities and their families. We have also rolled out household training on hand-washing and distribution of P&G purifiers of water.  The distribution will ensure that at least 3,900 families have safe drinking water in this period and are able to practice effective handwashing.

Handwashing for Nyamira County

In collaboration with Nyamira County, we have distributed 100 handwashing stations to several health facilities. The distribution was flagged off by the Governor of Nyamira County, H.E John Nyagarama. Aqua Clara Kenya has trained and supports 86 Community WASH Promoters in the County who will be visiting households to train them on hand-washing and distribute P&G sachets. The P&G sachets will provide safe drinking water to at least 5,160 families in this period.

P&G Distribution

A community member in Bomet County using a P&G water purifier sachet to clean the water for her household so they can have clean water to drink.

Earlier this year we highlighted in our Quarter 1 Newsletter that we began distributing P&G purifiers of water through our Community and School WASH Promoters. The distributions of the purifier sachets has been progressing well despite the challenges brought upon by the COVID-19 pandemic. The P&G solution is provided as a bridge to using water filters. Often, community members take 1-2 months after training to get money to acquire our water filters. In the meantime, they struggle to make their water safe for drinking. With the collaboration with P&G, through our partner Transform International, community members and schools can start drinking safe water from Day 1 of interacting with us and transition to the more sustainable water filters when they are ready.

In April alone, we have distributed P&G sachets to 9,450 households in Nyamira and Bomet Counties,  impacting at least 47,250 people. This will come in handy especially in this period of Covid-19 when families need more time to raise money to purchase longer-term solutions such as water filters. Through 151 Community WASH Promoters trained and supported by ACK, each family additionally received training on hand-washing. Each CWP was supplied with a face mask and trained on precautions they need to take in light of Covid-19.
