Catch and sniff

A patent by Ford published on April 9th shows a system capable of detecting smells in hired rides (uber, taxi etc.) This would allow passengers to choose their car based on their smell. Is this purely for comfort or for allergies and cigarette smoke? As most patents are rarely seen through to the end we may never know.
