We hope you are well and taking care of yourselves during this time. Thanks for all you do to take care of your communities!

Check out the latest news about the Horowitz Center for Health Literacy and Health Literacy Maryland:

Health Literacy Tool Spotlight:
Clear and Simple

Clear & Simple outlines a process for developing communications materials for people with limited literacy skills.

We've talked about defining your audience, conducting target audience research, developing a concept for the product, and developing the content and visual design features.

The final step is to pretest and revise your draft materials. Test your materials for comprehension, attractiveness, and acceptability. Then revise based on the feedback you receive.

Ideally, at least 25 to 50 members of the intended audience should review each product. If time and budgets are limited, it is far better to test material with 5 to 10 people than not to test it at all.

Find a list of concrete ways to test your materials on the Clear & Simple website.

That's a wrap! We hope that going through these 5 steps has been helpful for your organization. Are you interested in creating materials for people with limited literacy skills, but unsure of next steps? Email us:  healthliteracy@umd.edu

What Caught Our Attention Recently...

We've been monitoring communication about COVID-19 and gathering examples to highlight the types of messages, presentation styles, sources, and channels being used to reach different audiences. Check them out here and let us know your thoughts!

Although the Center does not endorse or advocate for any specific organizations or resources, we hope to ignite a conversation about the resources' effectiveness and how well different audiences are being served.

Our Rima E. Rudd Fellows in Health Literacy continue to impress. Catherine Maybury successfully defended her dissertation, and we selected Laura Koo as the next Rudd Fellow. We are excited for both as they continue their respective journeys to advance health literacy!

The Horowitz Center is open for business and operating off site until at least May 22. The best way to reach us is by email at healthliteracy@umd.edu.
