Health Literacy Tool Spotlight:
Clear and Simple
Clear & Simple outlines a process for developing communications materials for people with limited literacy skills.
We've talked about defining your audience, conducting target audience research, developing a concept for the product, and developing the content and visual design features.
The final step is to pretest and revise your draft materials. Test your materials for comprehension, attractiveness, and acceptability. Then revise based on the feedback you receive.
Ideally, at least 25 to 50 members of the intended audience should review each product. If time and budgets are limited, it is far better to test material with 5 to 10 people than not to test it at all.
Find a list of concrete ways to test your materials on the Clear & Simple website.
That's a wrap! We hope that going through these 5 steps has been helpful for your organization. Are you interested in creating materials for people with limited literacy skills, but unsure of next steps? Email us: healthliteracy@umd.edu
