Preserving the Gardens at Bacon's Castle and Smith's Fort

We are excited to wish the Garden Club of Virginia a happy 100th Year! This week was supposed to be Historic Garden Week, so two new blog posts from our curator of collections Lea Lane and director of museum operations and education Jennifer Hurst-Wender discuss our sites, their relation to the Garden Club and the work to preserve their unique gardens. Check them out below!

A Landmark Year for Virginia Landscapes

Photos in our archives show a 1938 visit of a group representing the Garden Club of Virginia at Smith's Fort, where they helped restore the gardens there. See the photos on our blog!

The Oldest English Formal Garden in North America

In 1983, with the help of the Garden Club of Virginia, the gardens at Bacon's Castle were restored. Archaeological excavations determined it to be the site of the oldest English formal garden established in North America. Read more about it on our website!

If you love Virginia history and want to see it preserved, please consider making a monthly gift. This type of giving can really add up over the course of the year and makes a huge difference. Monthly donations are helping us create new programming such as:
  • Virtual tours of our historic properties online
  • Educational programs for students at home during the COVID crisis
  • Updated educational resources on our website
  • Webinars on history topics and preservation best practices
  • Continued consultation on preservation issues across the Commonwealth and advocacy campaigns for saving historic sites

We're fulfilling our mission digitally and need your help during these difficult times. If you're interested in making a recurring, monthly gift, you can do so quickly and securely at https://preservationvirginia.org/support/monthly-giving/ or contact Marny Hackley, annual fund manager, at mhackley@preservationvirginia.org.

Thank you for making historic preservation a continued priority in your life and helping save irreplaceable sites for future generations.
