Hello, all.

Peter Sinn Nachtrieb, the playwright (qualify?) here, writing to you from my San Francisco writing place. I miss seeing any faces.

A number of people (3) have asked me how these (...fill in later...) times are affecting my creative process.  In the spirit of "show, don’t tell," I thought I’d share a page from my “Playwright” notebook from last Thursday, April 16:

4/16/20 - creativity document

New play ideas:

  • Immersive musical based on Spanish Flu.  no
  • Science fiction musical: Shelter in Space. no
  • King Lear 2. no no no
  • The Binocular Plays.  (does Rosetta Stone offer classes in semaphore?)
  • Write plays that are not supposed to be performed.
  • Write plays that will be relevant in two to three year’s time (easy transition).
  • Sexy Home Workouts with Peter Nachtrieb (too niche market)

Possible new play settings?

  • One person show in large field.
  • Abandoned Town.
  • Forest.
  • Desert.
  • Pacific Ocean.
  • The “Cloud.”
  • Mud pit of despair. (check If anyone has free mud donation connection?)
  • Former can factory? (prob too small.)

Brainstorm personal marketing email:

In these…
Uncertain times?
Odd times?
Uncomfortable, large, acute, awkward, panicky, distressing, wacky (tacky?), anxious, grand, epic, humbling, wow-this-really-puts-things-in-perspective, wow-the-customs-of-culture-and-society-really-can-transform-in-an-instant …Sexy Times? Best of Times and/or Worst of Times?
***JUST PICK ONE LATER, PETER!

New play idea: write uplifting play about a “Certain Time?”
Research: Historical period when times were certain.

Reminder: A shower makes it feel like a new day.

Brainstorm: possible new procrastination techniques. (do this after watching Bravo)

Alternative job ideas?

Write non-plays? Write manuals. Write emails. Write words. Of course your write words, you idiot. Teach writing.   Watch writers from afar. Professional self doubter. Medical School.  My mom just said it’s not too late to go to medical school. Research truth of that?  No. NO. Yes. NO! STOP IT, PETER.

Research: What does it take to be an influencer?
Research: Are there any canneries still operating in Monterey.
Research: What is the nicest thing to squeeze.
BUY: Something you really don’t need.
ALSO BUY: Donuts from the Dunkin Donuts in South San Francisco.

Research: Fun new ways to clean your butt.

Schedule: Go on a walk to twin peaks!
PETER, NO NEED TO SCHEDULE WALKS, JUST WALK FOR GODS SAKE. JUST MOVE YOUR GODDAMN LEGS. WHY AM I WRITING IN ALL CAPS TO MYSELF? YOUR TYPOGRAPHY HIERARCHY IS UNCLEAR

Schedule: Wine purchase.
Schedule: Watch meditative movement video and/or porn

Research: Hope
Research: Resilience
Research: Strength and community and finding power and inspiration in others.
Research: Gratitude for who surrounds me.
Research: When will See’s Candy reopen?

As you can see, I'm being very productive.

SPEAKING OF DOING SOMETHING PRODUCTIVE: Z Space, an essential artistic home for myself and countless Bay Area and International performing artists and companies, is boldly striving to carve a path forward in a future.

They, like so many many many artists and workers and small businesses, could really use some support.  If you happen to have an extra few bucks to throw their way, you'd be helping keep a vital arts space open and ready to welcome us back as soon as we are able and willing.

We'll need things to go out and do once we're all done with being isolated. You can make a donation here.

FINALLY

Berkeley Rep commissioned me to write a short play for the Play At Home initiative that you can read/perform at home.  I wrote about Scientists on Spring Break.  Read it here!
Take care, all!  Looking forward to sharing some new plays with you when that's a thing again!
