ANTHC APRIL BROWNBAG:  Tues, April 28, 2020 - 12:00-1:00 AKDT
Dr. Eric Bortz,
PhD, Associate Professor of Biological Sciences, UAA will present “Phyloepidemic tracing of COVID-19: next-generation sequencing of coronavirus genomes.” COVID-19 has spread across the US (over 800,000 confirmed cases, and 44,575 deaths) and to Alaska (329 cases, 9 deaths). COVID-19 is primarily a respiratory disease with complex immunological and physiological manifestations, with high impact in aged and vulnerable populations with underlying conditions. “Phyloepidemiology” can assist efforts in contact tracing to understand the relative risks of community spread of COVID-19. At UAA, in collaboration with UAF and the Alaska Public Health Laboratory, we have deployed next-generation sequencing technologies to track the genomes of the SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) coronavirus. Understanding virus genome variation can also contribute to validation of diagnostics, understanding viral pathogenicity, and development of vaccines.
