Hope you're all doing well and adjusting to the new norm of social distancing and web-confined interactions. It's definitely been an adjustment for our board and new staff (more on that below!), but we're excited to share what we've been up to along with some ways for y'all to stay involved.

Membership Guide Launch

In the last few months, City Roots Members and Volunteers have been working on a new City Roots CLT Membership Guide. This guide pulls together essential information about being a member of City Roots including; requirements of membership, ways members can contribute to City Roots, and a collection of CLT tools and resources.
Join us on Thursday, 4/23 from 5-6pm for an interactive webinar about the guide and what it means to be a member of City Roots Community Land Trust! Check out the Membership Guide now by clicking here. We need feedback from you on this, so there'll be a quick interactive presentation of the guide followed by some dialogue and brainstorming.

Shout out to the Primus family who've been busy making their CLT house into a home! They'll be closing on the house in late-spring / early-summer just as soon as a new round of funding becomes available for the Homebuer Dream program.
One thing that sets City Roots apart from similar initiatives is that we work with potential CLT homeowners in order to set them up with as many grant opportunities as we can and to time the sale of the house with the availability of those funds. The goal is to make successful homeownership affordable and accessible to all who want it!

City Roots just got 5 more houses!!!
Yes! We've added 4 affordable rental units and two single family homes to the CLT. All but one of the properties is currently occupied, so we'll be working with the residents to address any issues they have and to see what other improvements we can make. We're also offering rent forgiveness to those experiencing financial hardship due to the pandemic.
For the unoccupied house, we'll be doing another full rehab. We'll be partnering with our friends at Project Phoenix again, of course, counting on all of you to help make it happen! When it's finished, we'll have another permanently affordable homeownership opportunity!

Introducing Carolyn Scott! Carolyn joins us from the Flower City Americorps program. She's participated in the program before and will be splitting her time between City Roots and the Southwedge Planning Committee. We're thrilled to have her with us!

After more than three years as an all-volunteer grassroots organization driven by hundreds of amazing people lifting up housing as human right, the City Roots CLT board of directors has hired Joe Di Fiore as our Executive Director and first staff member. Seen above with his family (guy with the hat) along with CLT board member Ryan Acuff and other members of Take Back The Land in the pre-City Roots days. Congratulations, Joe!

Many of you have reached out to ask if we're still having meetings and how you can stay involved during the pandemic. Going forward, we'll have a weekly with rotating committees/topics. The first way you can help is to let us know which committees and topics interest you!
Finance (& Fundraising): It's a great feeling to know that a grant application you helped right was accepted! The Finance committee puts together City Roots' budget for board approval. In addition to grant writing, the Fundraising sub-committee solicits donations from area businesses and organizes fundraisers. No previous experience needed. We can even provide training and templates. Please help us find the best time to meet.
Outreach (& Communications): Are you a "people person"? A great public speaker? Are these skills you want to develop? This committee gives presentations on the City Roots and the CLT model and also organizes our CLT 101 & 102 events. We prepare by doing mock presentations and we can provide additional training for those who really want to up their public speaking skills. Help us find a meeting time by filling out this poll.
Communications: Maybe you're a little more on the introverted side, but still want to help get the word out. If you're all about Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, TikTok, and beyond, this could be the role for you. This is a sub-committee of our Outreach team and is all about social media communication, e-newsletters (mailchimp), phone calls, texts, and even the classic snail mail.
Policy & Governance: If the phrase "policy wonk" means anything to you, you're more than qualified to be on this committee. Researching best practices, recommending policies to the board, and working on important documents like our ground lease and bylaws are what these folks do. Interested in joining? Technology: From WordPress to Javascript, this committee does the back end of our website, email, server, and donations, as well as generally handling all things technology. Contact us if you are interested in this committee.

Membership
City Roots Community Land Trust is 501.c.3 community controlled non-profit working to establish lasting affordability in our communities here in Rochester, NY. City Roots acquires land and improvements (houses, apartments, commercial buildings, gardens, playgrounds, etc) and then puts it to our members to decide how it should be used.
You qualify as a member if you live within the City Rochester and you meet two of the three qualifications: 1) Pay $25 annual dues; 2) Attend at least 4 CLT meetings within 12 months; and 3) Volunteer in some capacity on behalf of the CLT.
