Keep Sandgate Beautiful Association's Habitat Brisbane Group Application - seeking community feedback.

KSBA are a fantastic community group that has done a lot of work over many years to promote the conservation of the environment in our local community. They are applying to become a Habitat Brisbane Group, which I wholeheartedly support. Below is a message from the group that explains what it means to be a Habitat Brisbane Group and what their plans are for the future of our local area.

"Keep Sandgate Beautiful Association is applying to Council to become a Habitat Brisbane group so that it can continue the work it started with a community planting on the edge of Dowse Lagoon in October 2018, funded from the Lord Mayor’s Suburban Initiative Fund. The purpose of that planting was to plant a variety of native shrubs and clumping plants to enhance the lagoon habitat for birds and other wildlife.

The area that we are proposing as a Habitat Brisbane site, is the area between the water line and the mown area running parallel to Hoskins Street, starting with the area behind the Sandgate Bowls Club that was planted in 2018 and continuing to the corner of Hoskins and Southerden Streets. We would continue to keep a focus on ground and shrub level planting to provide greater plant diversity to enhance the resilience of the lagoon habitat for birds and other wildlife. The weeding and planting in this area would not change any part of the Reserve that is used for recreation and the view over the water from the observation deck opposite the Rotary Park car park would be maintained.

So much habitat for birds and other wildlife is lost to development, that it is very important to look after natural areas like the surrounds of Dowse Lagoon to ensure that they are as rich and resilient as possible in our changing climate. Dowse is one of a mosaic of wetlands between Tinchi Tamba and Boondall Wetlands and part of the Moreton Bay Wetlands of International Importance under the Ramsar agreement

Late last year, KSBA received a Commonwealth Communities Environment Program grant. The grant has paid for a wetlands ecologist’s report on our original planting that has provided us with guidance on how to further enhance the lagoon habitat for wildlife and we will use the report as a guide to the work we will do if we become a Habitat Brisbane group.

The Habitat Brisbane program is a Brisbane City Council program which facilitates community participation in the care and restoration of Brisbane’s bushland, wetlands and waterways with the objective of increasing biodiversity, a sense of community and community awareness of the values, threats and management needs of these natural areas. Applicants must show they have consulted the community about their intentions."

Above is a map of the area around Dowse Lagoon that would be covered by this new Habitat Brisbane group.

Please let me know if you support this application, or if you have any further questions.

Cheers
