Cultural Resources for the COVID-19 Era Round  3

The mission of the Don and Catharine Bryan Cultural Series is to bring national and regional cultural events to the Outer Banks across all three artistic genres performing, visual and literary.
Since we can get together to enjoy great art we thought we would try to bring you to some great art events through the power of the Internet.
We hope you enjoy these offerings.  If there is something in particular you would like us to focus on please let us know by emailing us at info@bryanculturalseries.org
Quick Bits.
Jake Fowler is the Music Director of our Surf and Sounds Chamber Music Festival   He created this marvelous performance for us.  Don’t ask how he did it, we have no idea.  Enjoy “It Is Well With My Soul”
We will have news about our Ocracoke Alive Benefit Concert Scheduled for May 15 shortly but until then we have something to tease you with.   Lou Castro and Marcie Brenner make us the band Coyote have been posting some wonderful Morning Music from Ocracoke.  In memory of John Prine they release this version of Fish and Whistle   It’s a great tribute to a unique and talented man.   You can find more in their Morning Music series  here.
We all need some “Joy” these days.  The Rotterdams Philharmonisch Orkest sends us this offering which they entitled ” From us, for you”  enJOY !

Performing Arts.

Earlier this month the National Theater (of England)  premiered Jane Eyre directed by Sally Cookson.
There are clips on the music, set design , movement  and costume design in the production in this collection of videos about the play
We might was well put a classic in here as well.  Here is Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew.  The performance is by the University of Alaska Anchorage Department of Theatre & Dance.  They do a very nice job.
The Wilson Center at Cape Fear Community College is offering their Ghostligt Series 6 nights a week. It features live performances by artists and musicians from the Wilmington area and beyond.  You can find the archives on their website.
We posted this link in our first COVID-19 Cultural Resources email but it is really worth reminding you about. NPR has a page that lists many upcoming concerts in a variety of mucosal genres.

Visual Arts

Degas at the Opéra was open for less than two weeks before the National Gallery closed, so they have curated a selection of opportunities to experience the exhibition from home. We hope you enjoy the first show dedicated to Edgar Degas’s fascination with the Opéra—its spaces, the music, and the people surrounding the thriving theatrical life of 19th-century Paris.
Gallery’s collection of works by Degas—the world’s third largest—with video footage captured on the last day the Gallery was open.
You can take the virtual tour of the exhibition or listen to a lecture by Kimberly A. Jones, exhibition curator and curator of 19th-century French paintings at the Gallery, shares insights about this exhibition—the first to focus on Degas’s enduring fascination with the Paris Opéra.  You can find even more resources about this exhibition on this summary page.
Once you finish that tour or maybe before you start you might enjoy this free course from Allison about Great Artists and Their Works   This free online art history course will give you a comprehensive overview of the lives and works of great artists like Leonardo da Vinci, Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino better known as Raphael, Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, Jacques-Louis David, Edouard Manet, and Pablo Picasso. It will also examine great works of art such as The Last Supper by Leonardo, the Frescos in the Sistine Chapel by Michelangelo, and more.

Literary Resources.

We had a request for some resources on or by Papa Hemingway.  Here is a CBS Sunday morning feature on the great writer.  We also found a wonderful New Yorker article from 2014 on Hemingway evaluating his own writing     If you want to learn more about Hemingway along with Fitzgerald and Faulkner you can take this free course from Yale.  25 Videos each a 50 minute  lecture should fill some days for you.

Just for Fun

Here a couple of resources just for fun.  First a wonderful video produced in Corolla recently showing the resort community deserted.  It’s called In the Eye Of The Storm - A Quiet Corolla, NC During Our Global Pandemic

Finally Harry Potter’s alma mater is offering free online classes. The website Hogwarts is Here resembles online learning portals and libraries of muggle academic institutions. You can create an account and choose whether you’re a Gryffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw or Hufflepuff.

You can help by telling us what you are enjoying want what you would like us to find.
We can’t wait to get back to live events but until then these emails will have to do.  Stay safe,

Together we will get through this.
