Friday Update

24th April 2020

New in this week: Cheddar Strawberries

It's early, but it's here - local strawberry season. Cheddar is famous for growing strawberries - in the 19th century demand was so high that a railway was built to link Cheddar to Brunel's main line so that the fruit could be transported quickly to cities such as London and Birmingham . This early in the season, when they are not so cheap, we eek them out at home by making this Meringue Roulade - a pudding that looks impressive but is pretty easy to make.

Oleo Bodycare

We are old friends with Olivia (the hands behind Oleo Bodycare): she used to work for us before she found somewhere warmer to be in the winter months, and we are next-door stallholders at Bridport's Saturday Market when it is running. We stock some of the Oleo range - it is handmade with top quality ingredients, smells lovely, works brilliantly, is vegan-friendly and made in Bridport. At the moment there is a flash sale on their website and free delivery for DT6 postcodes, otherwise add to your order from us or have a look when you are next in the shop.

Lockdown Learning

Here's something for parents, grandparents, carers and teachers. We are all trying our best to educate, motivate and inspire our children while schools are closed. Different schools have different strategies and I am sure many of us are slightly overwhelmed by the online resources, but if you have a farming-mad child and need something other than YouTube to fill the time, why not try these great websites.

  • From "Why are farmers so smelly?" to farming with robots, #LockdownLearning with partner NFU has some great videos and activities. Not just restricted to primary age - there are some informative and thought-provoking articles for older teens too.
  • One of our favourites for the under 7s is Tractor Ted's Funzone Colouring, songs, family games and activities all for free.
  • The Countryside Classroom Passport is a printable activity book for children to tick off as they complete. Sections include Food, Farming and The Natural Environment and points are collected along the way.
