Shimpo Wheel Sale
Bring in the 2020 with a new wheel. You'll be amazed by the responsive, powerful and durable features of a Shimpo pottery wheel. The Shimpo VL Whisper Wheel is one of the most popular models on the market and it's no wonder why- with a direct drive motor handling 100 lbs of clay, a two year warranty, and a powerful 1/2 horsepower motor so quiet you have to hear it to believe it- this wheel is built to last a lifetime. For a wheel that's lighter in price, artists love the Shimpo VL Lite Pottery Wheel. The VL Lite gives you the durability of a 1/2 horsepower motor, but is light on extra features, making it portable and affordable. For the hobbyist or artist on the move, you'll love the convenience of the Shimpo Aspire Pottery Wheel. This Aspire tabletop wheel is lightweight and compact, yet can handle centering 20lbs of clay.

New Books
Peter Voulkos and Rudy Autio were two of the driving forces in contemporary ceramics. They both worked at the Archie Bray Foundation so it is appropriate to have two books available about these artists. "The Art of Peter Voulkos" is on sale for $25 and "It Comes Around Again" A Memoir, Rudy Autio is on sale for $35. They are both a great addition to your library.

New Items
Lizella Clay - This material is sometimes cited as a substitute for Redart in bodies, but the two materials are very different. Compared to Redart, Lizella has a higher drying shrinkage (6.5% vs. 5.5%), it is much more plastic (thus more prone to cracking during drying). The iron content is lower (5% vs. 7%). As far as fired maturity, these materials are not even close. At cone 4, for example, Lizella has around 11% porosity vs. almost zero for Redart, and 4% fired shrinkage vs. 8% for Redart. Lizella stays stable to cone 10 oxidation, Redart is melting by then.

Reed Wax - Wax Resist Emulsions coat smoothly with no drag, are transparent, dry quickly to a non- tacky finish and clean off with minimal effort. This wax is not effected by freezing.

Calendar & Events 2020

Dear Bray Community,

After a difficult assessment of the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Archie Bray Foundation has made the decision to cancel our on-campus summer programs and activities through August 1, 2020. Closures include all in-person summer workshops and classes, the Annual Bray Benefit Live Auction and Brickyard Bash, and summer exhibition openings.

While we, sadly, are unable to gather on campus, the staff are hard at work to reconfigure our education and exhibition programs for digital participation and involvement. Our annual Mother’s Day Pots and Plants Sale will be offered as an online spring sale for both local pick-up and shipment. The education staff is developing an online workshop series with our resident and visiting artists. Upcoming exhibitions and the annual auction will be viewable in digital catalogs with the work available for purchase online. A top priority is to stay connected to you, our community, at this time.

During closures, online and phone sales/orders will continue for the Gallery and Clay Business for pick-up or shipment. Bray administrative staff remain available via phone and email. Please reach out if we can assist you or provide resources during this challenging time.

As a non-profit, the Bray relies on support from community members like you to offer an environment that stimulates creative work in ceramics. Several of our long-time supporters have asked how they can help the Bray while we have reduced activity and unplanned closures. Here are a few ideas:

  • Turn your workshop or class registration fee into a tax-deducible donation. If you are registered for a canceled summer workshop or class, consider donating the purchase to the Bray. Your donation helps offset some of the expenses already accrued. We fully understand if you are not in a position to do so and are happy to offer you a full refund or you can contact us to discuss other options.
  • Renew, Upgrade or Become a Bray Member. An immediate way to help is by renewing or upgrading your membership. As a thank you for your partnership at this time, we’ve added a special new member benefit, at any amount, for new, renewed or upgraded memberships—a coupon for a one-time, 25% discount on a Bray purchase up to $200. This discount can be used for a class or workshop registration, Gallery purchase, or Clay Business purchase. Your financial support will help us weather this difficult time but provide you with access to our programs when we have re-opened to the public. To renew or join, click here.
  • Make a Donation in any amount. We are always grateful for your support and, if you are able to, consider making an additional gift to the Bray. To make a tax-deducible donation, click here.

Hearing from our community now is especially meaningful and when the time is right, we are eager to re-open our doors and warmly welcome everyone back to the Bray. Until then, we are dedicating this time to find new ways to share clay and creativity with you.

Make sure to follow us on Instagram and Facebook so we can stay connected or sign up to our e-mail list on the Bray website www.archiebray.org.

Sincerely,
 Steven Young Lee
