2020 SRS Update
 The United States GLOBE Student Research Symposia (SRS) will not be held this spring due to COVID-19. The next in-person Student Research Symposia will be held in the spring of 2021, at the same locations as the 2020 events. While it is no replacement for an in-person event, we would like to honor the progress and dedication of students working this spring on SRS projects. There will be an opportunity for students to receive feedback virtually. Projects uploaded by May 1, 2020 to the GLOBE website and tagged with SRS will be reviewed by STEM professionals who will leave comments on the project page. We also invite GLOBE students to participate in the peer review process.

In Southeastern Virginia lies the largest fresh water lake in the state which is nestled inside the country's most historic and largest African American communities. Lake Cavalier, a reservoir created out of back fill material for a local interstate highway, is tucked away inside the community where it has sat quietly almost untouched and pristine for decades. However, attached to this community asset is the Warfield Canal; a winding creek located in between nearly a mile long stretch of moderate to low income homes. The Warfield Canal, despite the cries of residents, has remained polluted, debris filed, and contaminated with chemicals for most of its history; creating both a hazard and a potential environmental justice issue for neighboring residents. However, a community group called the ECO District Hampton Roads project is about to change that with the use of GLOBE and other scientific tools. The group recently won two grants from the Union of Concerned Scientist and from NOAA to engage residents, students, teachers and local agencies to collaborate on the mitigation of the observed challenges with the canal. The canal recovery strategies will include the use of GLOBE protocols and tools including Mosquito, Atmosphere, Biosphere Protocols, along with analysis from consultants, debris removal, installation of conservation measures and mitigation of pollution sources.
