SADOE News & Updates

Dear Friends,

May General Meeting Cancelled

Unfortunately, we are going to cancel our upcoming General Meeting on May 5th at Ryan's Saloon as we have no indication that the quarantine will be lifted by that date. We are exploring a possible virtual meeting and will release details soon.

Our friends and hosts at Ryan's Saloon, located at 926 S. Wells Ave., is open for food pick-up. Please call  775-323-4142 to order and visit their Facebook Page to verify hours and menu items which may vary.

For those of you who haven't seen their YouTube commercial, here is "Ryan's Saloon - A Journey To Find The Best Food In Nevada!" which promotes their curbside service and their "unique" customers.

Care Package For Kirk Holden Update

We received word from our Hugh Lantz Award For Public Service Winner, Kirk Holden, that he received his care package of donated items from the St. Patrick’s Day Dinner. He and his fellow soldiers in Afghanistan received all of your beef jerky and coffee. He said to be sure to tell all of you to “be safe and pass along all our thanks to everyone”

As you may recall, he chose to redirect the tissues and sanitary wipes that were donated to those locally in need and thus they were donated to the homeless at residing at the Reno Events Center. Thanks again goes to Kirk for his selfless act and sacrificing what was intended for him. And thanks again to all of you who donated items at our dinner.

Membership Drive Now Underway
SADOE's membership drive is underway and  we ask that you begin thinking of renewing your dues if you have not paid them yet. If you have not joined yet, we ask that you do so now. Our membership dues are a significant part of our annual budget and its ability to donate to local charities.

Normally, we would remind you that membership benefits include members-only events such as our whiskey tasting events we held last year and discounts on SADOE events. However, to say that seems disingenuous at the moment since there is so much uncertainty of future gatherings.

So I will ask you to please pay your membership dues if you are able to before our June 30 deadline so we can plan our annual budget. Our model has been to donate to local charities and Celtic organizations, once we have established our operating budget for the year.

We appreciate your ongoing support and look forward to when we can start holding gatherings again. You may download a membership form which is attached in this message or by clicking on this link.

The History Of The Surname O'Callaghan

Note: This is another in an ongoing series we hope to present in our weekly e-mails as IrishCentral.com features histories of prominent Irish surnames. If applicable, we will also feature SADOE members who share the same surname.

Variants: Callaghan, Callahan, Ó Ceallacháin.

Sports and broadcasting are strong talents among some of the members of this clan. Here's Irish Central's history and a rundown of some famous Irish O'Callaghans.

The original usage of O Ceallachain name was given to mean ‘descendants of Ceallachain’, a King of Munster from 935 AD to 954 AD. The most prolific Callaghan sept was found in Cork, west of Mallow, although they re-settled in County Clare when they lost their land to the Cromwellian plantation. The family forfeited their land, and it was taken over by Longfield family (who always claimed they were actually of French extraction and not, in fact, Cromwellian).

While we do not have any SADOE members with that surname, our state's late 23rd Governor, Donal Neil "Mike" O'Callaghan,
left a huge legacy. While he was Nevada's governor form most of the 1970s he created many of the state's social service agencies and created the bi-state agency, Tahoe Regional Protection Agency, to ensure the preservation of Lake Tahoe.

Prior to being elected governor, he served as Lt. Governor, social worker, high school teacher and boxing coach in Southern Nevada. He was awarded the Silver Star and Bronze Star while serving in the Korean War and served as former U.S. Senator Harry Reid's history teacher at Basic High School in Henderson. After he left the governor's office, he became the Executive Editor of the Las Vegas Sun Newspaper until his death in 2004.
O'Callaghan's name is on a few buildings in the Las Vegas area and is shared with a late military veteran and football player on the Hoover Damn area bridge that connects Nevada with Arizona, the Mike O'Callaghan–Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge.

Irishman Claims To Spot Loch Ness Monster

An Irishman claims to have spotted the Loch Ness Monster for a second time this year after he appeared to catch the mythical creature on a webcam earlier this week, according to Irish Central.

Eoin O'Faodhagain, 55, is a Nessie enthusiast from County Donegal and made the sighting on Monday, April 13.  He also claims another sighting on January 18. O'Faodhagain is an Irish hospital clerk and a veteran Nessie spotter. He claims that he spotted the famous creature four times throughout 2019 alone.

Apparently there is a Web site which tracks such sightings since 2000.

Although the mythological creature that inhabits Loch Ness in the Scottish Highlands is more akin to Scottish folklore, Irish Central has another story on Ireland’s very own sea serpent.

Our Scottish Cousins in the Nevada Society of Scottish Clans has a related mascot of sorts, “Nessie,” which you may have seen previously such this photo above of it being pulled by one of their members, Chet Buchanan, in a Nevada Day Parade a few years ago.

Irish Government Warns Pubs May Not Open Until Next Year

The Irish government made a very shocking declaration earlier this week. According to Irish Central,  pubs in Ireland may remain closed for the rest of the year as politicians warn that it will not be safe to reopen them until a COVID-19 vaccine has been found.

Minister for Health Simon Harris said that he could not see how pubs could reopen if the Coronavirus was still present in Ireland and there was no vaccine or effective treatment against the virus.

Harris said that some restrictions could be eased but that some places where social distancing can't be safely observed would remain closed.

We are temporarily ceasing to publish Local Irish Bar promotions due to the mandatory closure order by state and local government authorities. When this crisis passes we will encourage gatherings at their establishments to help give them a little support.
