Issue 004

Saturday, April 18, 2020

It's Saturday 4/18. Thanks for opening this fourth issue of plus450.

A few words.

It's a dreary Saturday, fingers warmed only by the cup of coffee I brewed this morning (currently grinding Forty-Weight), and it is my 34th day of quarantine.
To be blunt—there's not a lot going on this week. Just like about everyone else I'm struggling to find grocery delivery, growing increasingly restless, and starting to ponder the how much new TV is left before we run out.

As Summer begins to hurtle itself toward us at an unprecedented pace, my outlook is broadening. Will there finally be a reasonable amount of space between my beach towel and the next? Will we be at the beach at all

Regardless of COVID — I've had enough of talking about that anyway —mornings like this make me miss Maine. The rocky shores and windblown pines, the cobblestone streets of Portland and the indifferent distant howl of a fog horn, the sense of adventure that surrounds this environment. There's nothing strange about taking a drive to revel in the salt spray and crashing waves of an oncoming storm. That's just what people do.

Lastly, I want to give a shout out to an old friend of mine and a huge inspiration, Ben Johnston. His 10ft Deep newsletter was one of my inspirations to create plus450, and he was gracious enough to give me a mention last week. Thank you, Ben.

A playlist.

A new mix this week featuring Electric Guest, BENEE, Cautious Clay, and others. It's a nice groove for the weekend at home.

Another Gary Hustwit film.

I keep posting these Gary Hustwit films, frankly because they are amazing, and being able to watch them for free is a huge opportunity. This film focuses on the design of the workplace, featuring the office redesign of R/GA. This is very relevant.

A podcast.

I am loving this design podcast, featuring interviews with some of the biggest and baddest studios out there. Hear thoughts from Gretel, Character, COLLINS, and more.

A mini rebrand.

I engaged in a mini personal rebrand sprint this last week—refreshing the messaging and visuals for kinfed, an organization I co-founded with my girlfriend last year. We're still working on kinfed.com and some other dedicated spaces, but for a rapid project done under a tight deadline, I think this came out successfully. It's important to continue challenging yourself—whether that be with iterative sketching, rapid exercises like this.
You can check out some more details about the rebrand here.
That's it! Thank you for scrolling and hopefully appreciating. Enjoy your weekend and shoot me a line at 450@tannerleslie.com if you'd like to share your thoughts or feedback on this first issue. See you next week.
