Keeping Busy and Happy during COVID-19 Sequestering
Missing dancing? Try dancing online!
All you need is your computer, tablet, or phone. It's easy!
  1. Our third SIFD Online dance session is this Wednesday 7-9pm. Don't know how to do that? Watch this short video on joining a Zoom meeting. See Zoom meeting details below. Then email your dance requests! We get a chance to chat between dances, and review the dances if necessary. It is set on Wednesday instead of Thursday because you should all tune into Stacy Rose on Facebook Live on Thursday evenings! Go to Stacy's facebook page and ask to be her friend so you can view her session! You will meet Stacy at our dancing on Wednesday!

  2. Keep checking my website daleadamson.com. It is being updated almost daily with more items that drop into my inbox. Lots of YouTube videos that you can follow anytime, plus timed events of dancing or singing on the Zoom platform. Zeljko Jergan was last Saturday, and next Saturday, Ahmet, Roberto, Joe, and Zeljko will be reviewing the dances they taught! See the events calendar that Judith English set up here.

  3. Be sure to read the note to all of us from our good friend Judith English of Ottawa below.

  4. Check the dances that we've done in past weeks here.
The entire executive thanks all the essential services workers among us. Thank you Steve, Suzy, Cindy, and anyone I'm missing!

Stay home and stay healthy,
Dale

Hi, Surrey group.

Although I live in Ottawa, I have danced with you for years, whenever I made it to the west coast.  I *love* dancing with you and spending time with you. You folks are so generous and welcoming; you light up my world when I attend.  So, it would make me and others very happy if we could connect again virtually.  If you are able to, please join Dale (and me!) for her online class, Wednesday's at 7 pm (your time). We can dance together, and also catch up on how everyone is doing.

Dale and I were wondering why so many of you haven't turned up for the zoom group.  Could people who aren't coming tell us why?  Do you have a time conflict?  Is it problems with your internet?  Zoom seems too hard?  Too much else happening?  Feel free to write to me (judithinottawa@gmail.com) as well as to Dale about anything that's getting in the way of you joining us (or anything else, for that matter).  Hugs and love.

Judith
Read this informative article on everything you need to do to join a Zoom meeting.
Or click this Zoom test meeting and Zoom will walk you through installing Zoom on your computer/iPad/iPhone/tablet/Android device or whatever you have. Then you will have the opportunity to check your speaker and microphone. You can choose if you want us to see your video or not. You can participate without having your own webcam. We’d love to see you but the camera part is optional (you don’t have to clean up your house, and nobody has a fresh haircut!!!).

Excerpt from Sonia Connelly's article online:
For people attending an online dance group:

  • What do I need to attend a group online
It's free to download the Zoom app and attend meetings. You'll need a computer, tablet, or phone, preferably with a camera (built-in is fine), a good internet connection, and some open space to dance. Optional: good speakers to make the music sound better.
  • How do I get started
Click on the meeting link before the meeting and install the Zoom app when prompted. Check that your sound and video work by joining a test meeting. Take a few moments to explore the app, and notice the row of useful buttons along the bottom.
  • How do I join a meeting
When the time comes, click on the meeting link and open the Zoom app. You can also enter the Meeting ID at zoom.us/join.
  • How do I see everyone
At the top right of the screen, there's a button that says either Speaker View or Gallery View. Gallery View shows you everyone, and Speaker view shows you the person who's speaking filling the screen.
  • How do I make sure I can see one dancer's feet
You can pin that dancer's video, by clicking on the video and selecting "Pin Video". Click "Switch to active speaker" on upper left or double tap the video to unpin. The host can also spotlight one video for everyone, see below.
  • How do I mute my microphone
You'll want to mute your mic except when you have something to say, to avoid interrupting others or grabbing the spotlight during a dance unintentionally. Click on the mic symbol at the bottom left of the window, or click the Mute button over your video. Click again to turn it back on.
  • How do I turn off my video
If you're taking a break or just don't want to share video, click the video camera button at the bottom left of the screen. Click again to turn it back on.
  • My camera doesn't work!
Zoom has camera troubleshooting tips for various operating systems. Check that no other app is using the camera, and that the Zoom app has permission to use the camera (and mic).
  • My microphone doesn't work!
Zoom has microphone troubleshooting tips for mobile devices. You can also test your audio.
  • Something is wonky during a session!
If sound is garbled, video is jerky, or the view gets stuck in some way, try turning your video off. If that doesn't help, try leaving the meeting, closing the Zoom app, and coming back in. Restarting your router and modem (unplug and plug back in) every month or two can clear up some issues. Check with your internet provider that you have enough bandwidth for video streaming.
