Online Safety Newsletter

Dear <<First Name>>

Welcome to the April edition of our Online Safety Newsletter.

While we all continue to live and learn in different ways, it's important to maintain the positive message of building safe behaviours online, whether at home or in school.

As always, you can use our first item in your own communications with parents.

Please get in touch with the team if you have any questions about this or if we can support you in any way.

Healthy Me Diary

The teams at eLIM, who support Somerset schools with technology, and SASP, who support with Sport and Activity, have produced this great diary to help build healthy habits at home - both physical and mental. Work together (parents/carers and children) to recognise healthy habits. Children record their achievements by colouring in a star each time they achieve a healthy behaviour. . Repeat the use of the diary every six weeks to become healthier and healthier!

There are two versions of the diary which can be downloaded for free:

Healthy Me Diary - simple (2 A4 pages) www.bit.ly/eLIM-Healthy-Me-Simple

Healthy Me Diary - booklet (with symbols - 6 A4 pages) www.bit.ly/eLIM-Healthy-Me-Booklet

DfE Guidance for Online Safety During School Closures

The DfE have published new safeguarding guidance, including specific Online Safety guidelines, for schools and colleges to refer to during Covid-19 arrangements.

The Online Safety section can be found at:
https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/covid-19-safeguarding-in-schools-colleges-and-other-providers/coronavirus-covid-19-safeguarding-in-schools-colleges-and-other-providers#online-safety-in-schools-and-colleges

Online Safety at Home Resources

The education team at Thinkuknow have launched new #OnlineSafetyAtHome resources to support schools and families during Covid-19 closures. The packs, which are released every fortnight, include 15 minute activities parents and carers can do with their child to support their online safety at home and are all for all age groups.

Thinkuknow have also published social media support resources to help schools share Online Safety resources with their families.

Caution over Use of Live Video

We advise extreme caution if you are considering the use of Live video to communicate with children. Communication with learners must always be open and transparent through official channels. The use of resources such as Google Meet, Microsoft Teams and Zoom must only be with the permission of SLT after a risk assessment has been done. Everything should be auditable (schools can only record the meeting with children if they inform the parent of Data Protection rights). A school will need to be clear how they are guarding against potential misuse by participants and the protection in place for the teacher facilitating the learning experience.

New eLIM Home Learning Webpage

We now have a Home Learning Page on our website. This includes our Home Learning Strategy Document , which we launched in March and continue to update regularly. Also on the page, you will find:

  • Guidance for schools including safeguarding and data protection
  • Advice to help families stay safe and healthy
  • Learning resource directories.

For Data Protection considerations around home learning, we have also produced this guidance.

New 360safe tool launched

The new version of 360safe, the online safety self-review tool, is now live at https://360safe.org.uk and continues to be free to use .

Key changes are:
  • 21 aspects instead of 28
  • Improved graphics and design
  • Better navigation around the tool
  • More reporting features
For existing users, all of your data will have been transferred to the new tool and you will still be able to access previous reports and commentaries under the previous structure.

Schools who are close to accreditation or re-accreditation will have a period of time in which they can still be assessed using the old structure.

The eLIM team are all trained as 360safe assessors so we can support you in using the tool, setting action plans and preparing for accreditation. For our subscribers in Somerset, accreditation continues to be discounted and we offer a free pre-accreditation check when you feel ready to apply for the award (this is in addition to your normal half-day visit). Please note that while schools are closed due to Covid-19, we are happy to offer this support remotely.

If you have any questions or would like support with using 360safe, please get in touch.

Updates to ActiveBYTES

We have now reviewed and updated all ActiveBYTE lesson plans and assemblies for 'I am healthy’ in the summer term.  We've checked links and made some changes, as we do every term, to ensure our resources are fully up to date.  We also now review the plans against the new DfE document ‘Teaching Online Safety in Schools’.

Please let colleagues know to use the new version rather than a plan they may have downloaded last year.  All the plans now include embedded Game-Based Online Safety Activities and suggested Gamebreak cards from our 'What's My Gameplan' resources.

We have also produced a new summer term assembly for schools that may have used the previous assembly plans in KS2.  Find assemblies in the right hand column on our ActiveBYTE page.

Take care of yourselves. Stay in touch. Use Office 365 or GSuite for Education to work collaboratively on documents and Skype, Teams and Google Hangout meetings to catch up with each other.
