Keeping children cycling through these challenging times

As everyone adjusts to changes brought about by the coronavirus, we as cycle instructors foresee the possibility of greater demand for Bikeability training in schools.

Avanti Cycling is working in the background to restructure training and be ready again as soon as lockdown restrictions allow. Your liaison officer will be in contact to reschedule planned summer term courses and book in dates for 2020/21 school year.

Although Covid-19 has played havoc with our Bikeability delivery, it is vital that schools maintain their existing calendar slots. This does not mean that you cannot schedule extra training to pick up any children who have missed out, but you need to keep planning for next year too. Your liaison officer will be able to discuss this with you.

Many people have taken up walking and cycling during the lockdown and may want to do the school run by bike. Cycle training may therefore become even more popular.

We will be ready to deliver the courses.

We're reviewing how we do Bikeability

Avanti Cycling is fully aware of the social distancing issues that need to be adhered to. We are looking closely at how we can adhere to them and keep training children on the road. We are keen to work with the schools to enable this to happen.

One area that we have thought about is reducing numbers within the group from 1 instructor to 6 trainees to 1 instructor to 3 trainees. This will enable us to have less close contact with riders on our courses.

Any new mechanisms of delivery will be agreed in advance with the Bikeability Trust and our partners in the local authorities.

We will run remote instructor sessions to ensure all our instructors are aware of the changes and liaise directly with schools.

Local holiday programme will be serious fun

The lockdown has given many children a welcome chance to ride in quiet traffic conditions - and they may now be ready to get some formal cycle training.

They can take advantage of our fun and informative holiday Bikeability sessions planned for this summer, assuming the coronavirus restrictions are eased.

The holiday courses will be based at several different venues spread across Reading, providing easy access to children in surrounding areas.

With lots of Year 6 children missing out on Bikeability training this coming term we are planning an increase in the number of holiday courses and locations - could your school be a hub for the local area and host for a summer holiday course?

A variety of courses will be on offer, catering for a range of ages (8-14) as well as abilities.

There's less traffic - a good time to be enjoying a family ride

Keen to take up cycling on the quiet roads? Avanti Cycling is keen to support you and is offering free bike hire, Dr Bike sessions and training for families who wish to take up cycling. Cycling is a great way to have fun with all the family especially now that the roads are so quiet.

Join our team of instructors

If you’re keen to promote cycling, are good with children and have some flexibility around working hours, you might like to consider working as a paid Bikeability instructor.

Avanti Cycling delivers training to an increasing number of schools in Reading, Wokingham, South Oxfordshire and Oxford and is looking for more instructors.

We work during the school day so the hours might suit parents. Do you know anyone who might be interested?

Please contact us to discuss how you might get involved.
