Bishop Pat's Message  - Second Week of Easter

Keeping the Lord’s Day Holy

As Catholics we recognise Sunday as ‘the Lord’s Day’ and follow the Scriptural imperative to “keep holy the Lord’s day.” (Exodus 20: 8ff). The Church calls us to do this through gathering as a community for Mass. Currently this Sunday ‘obligation’ is revoked. As a result, the internet is buzzing with Masses of the day streamed and pre-recorded.  They are a wonderful prayer resource. We do not watch these Masses like we do TV but join the priest in prayer, responding as we would normally and participating in any singing.

There is a danger that because of circumstances we consider that we are fulfilling an obligation that we do not have by accessing Mass on TV.  While recognising that many people benefit spiritually from watching Mass on television, we can keep the Lord’s Day holy in other ways. For each Sunday the diocesan Liturgy Centre prepare a Liturgy of the Word. This framework for breaking open the Word of God and enabling it to speak with and to the experience of life is a hands-on participatory experience of prayer. It is prepared mindful of family dynamics and an appreciation of inclusion.

Pope Francis reminds us that a relationship with Jesus “is intimate, it is personal, but it is in a community” (Homily April 17, 2020). Jesus’ disciples always lived their relationship with the Lord as a community. Liturgy of the Word is one way of gathering in community (our bubble community) for prayer. Further our Catholic tradition holds rich resources for prayer e.g. the Rosary, Lectio Divina. We can pray in many, many ways.  Lockdown might well be an opportunity to explore more than watching Mass.

Caring through COVID-19

The extension of the  COVID-19 lockdown is continuing to impact more heavily on our vulnerable families. This is likely to increase throughout the year.

If you would like to contribute to our emergency response appeal, please visit
https://secure.fundraiserpro.com/donate/catholiccaring/ and join many other concerned Catholics throughout the diocese who have already responded to this plea for assistance.

Thanks to the generosity of our Catholic Community, the COVID-19 emergency response appeal has now reached $100,000.

Parishioners Helping Communities

Through the generosity of some Far-North parishioners, a local church has been the grateful recipient of chickens – over 300 of them.

Father Maliu from St Peters parish in Pungaru, received a call from some of his previous parishioners. ‘Do you want some chickens?’, they asked. ‘Yes,’ was his instant reply. And soon he realised that he had said yes to receiving 300 live chickens to share with his parish and community.

Having a ready supply of fresh eggs for his parishioners and community has been a bonus for many local families. And Father Maliu has found the chance to look after his own brood of chickens during the lockdown period an enjoyable experience, too, even despite runaway chooks going for a wander through the presbytery.

Soon Father will be saying goodbye to the majority of his chooks, as a family with six children have asked if they can have them.

When Father was asked what else he would like to add to this story, he replied with a quote from one of the Star Wars movies. “Do it or don’t do it. But don’t try because you will never do it.”

Miha Māori on Zoom

Possibly a first; on Sunday 19th April, the Feast of the Divine Mercy, a Miha (Mass) was celebrated in Te Reo Māori. Pā Peter Tipene, Dean of St Patrick’s Cathedral, lead the celebration of Miha Māori which at least 90 participants and their whānau “zoomed” in.

The various parts of the Mass were led by Katekita (Catechists and Lay Leaders of Prayer) from Te Whānau Tapu Parish in Epsom. Each led their respective roles from their own homes. The Zoom technology has allowed this to happen while we are restricted from gathering.

Of particular note, Pā Ryan, who because of advanced age (he is in his 90’s) hasn’t been able to phyiscally be present at Te Ūnga Waka and Te Whānau Tapu Parish, was able to be virtually present for the Miha.

Whānau from as far afield as Wellington, Sydney, Brisbane, Whāngarei and the Taitokerau were able to be present and celebrate together. Such is novelty of using technology, that we truly are a Church without borders.

Pā Peter has offered to lead Miha each week until such time as we can gather again, which we are really looking forward to. Here a few screen shots from our “Miha Topa” (Zoom Mass).

NZ Catholic

This is a digital edition of the latest NZ Catholic, produced by our staff from their homes during the lockdown because of the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic.

We have made this available free of charge because we understand NZ Catholic does not qualify for print publication as an essential media service under the definitions announced by the Ministry for Culture and Heritage and the Prime Minister.

Pages may take a few seconds to load. With the pressure on online services with the nation in lockdown mode, we ask you to be patient.

Pages can be turned by hitting arrows at the side of the screen. The paper can also be downloaded as a whole pdf by hitting the download icon at the bottom of your screen.
