Dear Friend,

Wash Your Hands!

The translation work that Wycliffe missionaries do isn't just Bible translation!  We saw this first hand while in Cameroon during the spread of ebola.  Trauma healing, cultural stories, educational curriculum, songs, art forms and health information are part of the translation work.  With the Covid-19 pandemic, translators have been translating, "Wash Your Hands," so communities around the world can have preventative information.  You can view the languages and interactive map at the Ethnologue.  We were given a soap pump a couple of years ago by a friend.  It says 'Wash Your Hands and Say Your Prayers because Jesus and Germs are Everywhere.'  This soap pump has reminded us every time we wash our hands to be praying.  Maybe instead of singing Happy Birthday, frequent hand washing can be prayer time.  We're praying for you!

Living in the US during Covid with a Cameroon reference point

DeAnna was reflecting on the new "norms" that everyone has been thrown into with Covid-19 and how similar some of it is with transitioning to life in a foreign land.  She shared these comparisons on our blog, but we thought we would highlight one here too.  Do you remember a blog post for 2010 about produce cleaning in Cameroon?  With Covid in the US, DeAnna's been spraying the produce we purchase with a vinegar, lemon and water solution then rinsing and allowing to dry, which reminds her of produce cleaning in Cameroon.

Why?

Recently we were asked, "Why are you still working with Wycliffe?"  We have a passion for every person, tongue, tribe and nation to have God's Word in a language that speaks to their hearts.  In the past twelve years with Wycliffe, we've lived in places that weren't convenient or comfortable, we experienced medical issues (some are life long struggles) and we have more stress (especially with covid), however, those things that aren't pleasant to us are no reason for us to not continue pushing forward.  To us people having God's Word is as vital as people having air to fill their lungs.

Relationships from Home

We heard many years ago, before we joined Wycliffe that God created technology to advance His kingdom, He just lets everyone else use it.  When we joined Wycliffe, David was an IT Specialist who planned to serve in IT to help advance Bible translation.  For the first seven months in Cameroon, that's what he did as the Computer Services Manager for the branch.  His leadership skills were identified and he was asked to move into a role that not only encompassed IT, but grew his responsibilities immensely over many areas.  While living in Cameroon, we kept in contact with you via Skype, email, postal mail, phone calls and through newsletters.

DeAnna works full-time from our home walking with new Wycliffe missionaries, helping prepare them for their assignments.  She's been using Zoom everyday for almost four years to connect with new Wycliffe missionaries, meet with others from her team, meet with our organization's leaders, etc....  Zoom meetings have been her working staple and continues to be.

We were grateful for those Skype chats while overseas and are grateful that we can continue to grow in our relationships with others via the technology at our fingertips during this covid crisis.  We are grateful that although we are confined to our homes, we can "go to church" virtually on Sunday mornings, we can "meet" with our small group and we can video chat from our phones with friends and family.  We're thankful that technology has allowed a connection that wouldn't have been possible not that many years ago.
