:: GALLERY Q REMAINS CLOSED ::

Dear Friends of Q,

Per the guidelines issued by Governor Evers "Safer At Home" decree, the Gallery Q continues to remain closed until such time as the mandatory isolation period is lifted.

We miss seeing our friends and patrons so very much!
We are each working on ways to bring new art into the world as well as ways that we can continue to be a viable creative gathering space for our community offering uplifting and inspiring art.

Obviously, the most important thing is people.
We need our members to feel safe staffing the gallery when we can reopen and we want our patrons to feel safe enjoying the art and shopping for the perfect piece. As we have more information to share about those developments, we will update you through our e-newsletters as well as our Facebook page. If you haven't checked out our social media, you should! Each day of the week we have been sharing interesting new art, quotes, videos and even a weekly scavenger hunt for all your favorite Q artists. Come and join us!

Please continue your vigilance to stay safer at home so we can all find ways to come together again.

Remember:
Art heals. Art connects. Art uplifts.

Thank you for your continued support of Gallery Q.
Sincerely,
The Members of Gallery Q Artists Cooperative

:: SPOTLIGHT ON ::
Joan North, Jeweler
 Today we meet Joan North, jeweler.

Q :: Explain what you make in the most elemental way.
JN :: I use sheets of sterling and wire, along with stones to make fine jewelry.  With lots of tools and chemicals, an acetylene torch, and bright lights, I transform these simple elements into pleasing shapes and colors.

Q :: How did you come to make the art you make today?
JN :: I am a late-career artist who caught the creative bug and fell hard. Mostly after retiring from UWSP,  I studied with mentors, in workshops and books, knowing that I would be studying for the rest of my life.

Q :: What is the most satisfying part of making your art?
JN :: The best is at the end when all the pieces, mistakes, uncertainty, mystery comes together, and you first see the miracle baby you just created.  After that last polish, I become speechless with awe.  The second best is when I see someone enjoy my work or wearing one passing me on the street.

Q :: What is the biggest struggle of making your art?
JN :: Sometimes it seems like these creations are ALL about struggle.  Struggle to come up with ideas, with getting the silver to come together, with making mistakes. Sometimes, I want to give up and take up bird-watching instead. And after all that, there is all the paperwork and inventory spreadsheets.

Q :: When you are in an artistic slump, what is something you do to give yourself a creative boost?
JN :: Vivaldi’s flute concerto turned up loud always breaks through any fog.  Taking a walk also helps.  Staring at my stones/gems.

Q :: What is the most important tool to making your art, the one you couldn't live without?
JN :: Jewelry making is all about tools, so anointing the most valuable is impossible.  I remember hyperventilating just looking at pliers and hammers. A flex-shaft is the go-to speed drill along with a drill press.  Nothing could get done without torch heat.

Q :: How often do you make art?
JN :: In a normal week, I am working 4 out of 7 days for 4-5 hours.  With the corona virus, I am working 7 days!
Q :: Where do you make your art?
JN :: I am blessed with a home studio in what was my third garage.

Q :: How has Gallery Q helped you on your artistic journey?
JN :: So many ways. A wonderful place to display and interact with clients/friends.  The collaboration with other artists and watching their ideas develop helps me think bigger.

Our next Gallery Q show was supposed to be set up this weekend. Obviously, with the Safer at Home decree, we are not able to do that. But the show WILL be coming....we promise! This extra studio time has undoubtedly given Joan North and Pat Gaska more creative opportunities to explore, and they will be excited to share their masterpieces with you when we do return. In the meantime, here is what both Pat and Joan offered this to say about what's coming.

I’m trying to see this abundant “free” time as a positive! My first priority is to prepare for the upcoming Q show with Joan North. It has been a plus to have extra time to complete several new pieces. Beyond that, my husband and I are enjoying my fresh bread every couple of days, saving us unnecessary trips to the store. I’m also taking an online course in hand-stitching, learning all sorts of new skills. Every week there is a new small project that is challenging yet enjoyable. Results are shared via Facebook and people around the world are connected with, learning from, and affirming one another. We are all in this together!       ~ Pat Gaska
My upcoming show at Q Gallery will be called “Pieces to Masterpieces,” featuring my silversmithed jewelry and quilting by colleague, Pat Gaska.  Although silver and fabric may sound like strange bedfellows, the artwork for both of us consists of manipulating bits and pieces into valuable pieces of art.  Pat works with fabric, thread, pictures and paper.  I work with silver wire, silver sheet and nature’s stones.  Looking at a pile of our beginning materials, you would never guess what a Cinderella transformation happens. You can see the pieces that make up our “before and after” when you view this show.

While I was selecting stones for new creations for this show, I noticed that some stones actually resembled quilting.  So, I made a special collection of “Nature’s quilting”  jewelry for the show. (See picture below “Nature’s Quilting #2)

And then when the coronavirus hit, I decided to dedicate a collection of earrings with humorous poses the virus might take: sleeping, trapped, lurking and so forth. (See picture below “Virus Escaping”)       ~ Joan North

We are looking forward to this new show!
