SURVEY RESULTS ARE IN!
IMPACT OF COVID-19 ON  US AQUACULTURE

Virginia Tech Seafood and The Ohio State University Extension initiated an online survey designed to capture and quantify the effects of the corona-virus disease on US aquaculture. The survey will be distributed at the conclusion of every quarter for 2020, to attempt to capture the evolving impacts over time. Highlights of the first quarter survey are below:

The survey closed with a total of 652 responses, of which 537 were sufficiently complete to be usable. Based on the 2018 Census of Aquaculture, this represents approximately 18% of all U.S. aquaculture operations.

  • 90% of respondents indicate that they have been impacted by COVID-19.
  • 80% of respondents have had sales orders or contracts from private companies canceled
  • Sales losses reported ranged from < $1,000 to $5 million.
  • 33% of respondents have had to lay off employees. 26% respondents reported that "they will have to soon". The number of employees laid off ranged from 1-3 (56% of respondents) to more than 20 employees, with one comment that a farm or business has had to lay off 66 employees.
  • 54%  of respondents indicated that they had from 1-3 weeks to make a decision whether to lay off employees, with individual estimates of layoffs in excess of 290 employees for a single aquaculture farm.*
  • Without external intervention (such as governmental assistance), 13% of respondents said that they will not survive the next 3 months and 51% said that "maybe" they will survive the next 3 months. Only 20% said that they would survive 6 months without external assistance (47% said "maybe" they would survive 6 months, and 32% said that they would not survive 6 months without external assistance).

*please note that some of these responses are already 3 weeks old.

Additional analyses with these data are underway.

EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES
During this time of quarantine it is a good time for technicians, students and educators to spend time learning about aquaculture from home. Here are some online resources to check out:

Fish Health and Water Quality Videos - NEW RELEASE!  This series includes short (~5min) videos that discuss common fish diseases, prevention, diagnostics, water quality and more. Developed by University of Minnesota, The Ohio State University, North Central Regional Aquaculture Center and funded by USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture.
Online Fish Health Program for Producers - Originally funded and posted at the North Central Regional Aquaculture Center, these 6 modules were part of a certificate program created by WI Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection and UW-Stevens Point. These modules have information equivalent to online fish health courses that can cost hundreds of dollars to take, offered for FREE through UWSP NADF website with completion of a short survey.

WEBINARS...
The National Aquaculture Association has a number of webinars some of which include:

FURTHER ONLINE TRAINING/DEVELOPMENT THROUGH UWSP NADF:
  • Aquaculture Boot Camp - PowerPoint Video Sessions
UWSP NADF and partners provided a year long training program to provide an overview of various topics to those interested in pursuing aquaculture or aquaponics. The PowerPoint's from each session were recorded and available online.
  • Walleye Video Manual on Intensive Culture
Based on nearly 10 years of research, UWSP NADF has created a technical video series to raise walleye and hybrid walleye from egg to market size in indoor intensive systems. The videos show the basic protocols and management practices at the facility and will be accompanied by a user manual with further detail in the future.
  • Pond Culture Video Modules
Four PowerPoint video modules created by UWSP NADF and Lac du Flambeau Tribal Hatchery providing an overview of various topics regarding raising fish in ponds, highlighting walleye as the example species.
IN THE NEWS...

NEW HIRE at UWSP NADF, Marissa McIntyre is the facility's most recent Aquaculture Technician. Marissa comes to the facility from Michigan, graduating from Lake Superior State University with a B.S. degree in Fisheries and Wildlife Management, concentrated in Fisheries, with a minor in Aquaculture. Her experience is primarily with coldwater species from working at various state and federal hatcheries part-time. At LSSU she worked with Atlantic salmon at the Center for Freshwater Research and Education's fish hatchery for 2 years. She has been involved in several projects at UWSP NADF, working with Atlantic salmon (at left), walleye and lake trout.
"I knew that it would be a great opportunity for me to work here. This is my first job since graduating and I really look forward to gaining experience with coolwater and coldwater species, recirculated systems, and general aquaculture research." - Marissa McIntyre

NEW PROJECT AIMS WALLEYE TO BE NEXT VIABLE SPECIES FOR RAS...
New project at UWSP NADF,  funded through Wisconsin Sea Grant, will promote walleye aquaculture in recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS). Facility Assist. Director, Greg Fischer, explains “The capability to spawn walleye out of season in a controlled aquaculture setting is paramount to bringing commercial walleye production to fruition in the U.S....This newest project will allow us to move this species into the commercial aquaculture production sector in the Midwest.”
