A Strange Easter Meal
As many of you know, Ubuntu provides holiday meals for youth held at the Juvenile Justice Intervention Center (JJIC) and their families. Though this year we were unable to host an Easter family meal due to the Covid-19 crisis, we did provide pizza for the young people and staff of the JJIC. Especially during this time, it is crucial our young people know we have not forgotten them.
We want to thank all the staff of the JJIC for their support. They have been holding fewer children than normal at the facility and, so far, have had no known cases of Covid-19 within their walls.
However, Our Youth In Secure Care Are Not Safe
There are over 30 cases of Covid-19 in Louisiana's youth prisons. In the words of one teen, "I am very scared right now... to occupy the roughly 24 hours I am alone in my room, I have been given one book, a deck of cards, a puzzle, and a word search."
Ubuntu is partnering with Black Futures Lab to promote the Black Agenda and get folks to pledge to vote. Please take the pledge here and mark Ubuntu as the organization that referred you!
Stay Safe and Take Care of Each Other
To Our Supporters: Please be safe and take care of yourselves and each other. This is a scary moment and we need each other more than ever, even if we can only be present virtually or over the phone. This time will pass. We love and care about you all and look forward to getting the village together again once it is safe to do so.
