Dear Minnesota Croatian Friends,

I hope that everyone is healthy and safe and not going stir crazy with the Shelter in Place restrictions  in Minnesota.  It seemed like this virus went from zero to hundred in no time at all.

I send my gratitude to our Minnesota Croatian families with first responders, nurses, doctors and medical professionals who are bravely fighting on the front lines of this pandemic.  To all our other heros, the new essential workers - the grocery store employees, the truck drivers, the fast food employees, other workers on the front lines in manufacturing and small business owners who have had to close their doors and others who find themselves unemployed.

We're living in unprecedented times with a health crisis of the century.  My heart goes out to the kids missing out on school, not being able to play sports or participate in school activities.  Seniors who won't get to go to prom or have a graduation ceremony.  So many birthdays in confinement, vacations that have been cancelled, funerals have been put on hold indefinitely.  There are so many people who have been affected in a multitude of ways too numerous to list.

There are many initiatives to raise funds for Croatia due to the multiple earthquakes in Zagreb and the Covid-19 situation.  Here is a list of many worthy causes to contribute that I've been asked by Croatian leadership to share with the Minnesota Community.

1.  CFU - Croatian Fraternal Union.  All funds will be directed to the Croatian Red Cross through Go Fund Me.

2.  NFCACF - National Federation of Croatian Americans Cultural Foundation is asking for donations for the Zagreb Museum of Arts and Crafts which received extensive damage.  Donations may be Mailed to: NFCA-CF National Treasurer;  31 Marcia Lane; Rockville, MD 20851-1511

3.  ACAP - Association of Croatian American Professionals.  Supporting KB Dubrava (a hospital in Zagreb) and KBC (a hospital in Split) asking for funding for Medical equipment and supplies through Go Fund Me.

4.  The Croatian Embassy is looking for donations for the Covid-19 virus too.   Information for donations can be found on their Facebook page:

Also, notably, they have a request for a donation of some specific medical materiel, very much needed, would very much appreciate if you will be able to take a look into it and see if you can help getting hold of it, as follows (the priorities are in bold):

  • Protective mask FFP2 and FFP3
  • Face mask
  • Medical protective visors
  • Goggles
  • Protective coverall with hood and visor. Elastic cuff and ankles. Size S, M, L, XL, XXL
  • Disposable protection overall with hood
  • Pair of protection  shoe cover
  • Medical gloves nitril
  • Mechanical ventilator
  • Monitor vital sign
Sadly, we had so many activities planned for this year that were either cancelled or will have to be rescheduled.
  • March 22, the Timberwolves game was cancelled, but could potentially be rescheduled in the future.
  • April 30th, the Dubrovnik Paint Night.  This event will be rescheduled as soon as feasible when the Croatian Hall will reopen.
  • April 30th - May 3rd, The Festival of Nations was cancelled
  • Language classes cancelled as the Community Center is closed.
  • April 9th - 25th. The Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival has been postponed.
  • June picnic in Duluth will be postponed and will try again next summer
  • The Croatian Hall is closed until the Governor opens up bars and hall.
  • The NFCA  Annual Meeting may be held via a Zoom meeting instead of in Philadelphia like originally planned.
The Minnesota Croatian community was invited to participated in the Slavic Experience 2020 which will be held August 8th and 9th in North East Minneapolis.  It is the first year for this event.  I am not committing to this event at this time, but if there is anyone out there that would like to champion this event, please contact me.  I am personally hesitant to put our community's health in jeopardy until I am confident that we will be safe from this virus  There will be other opportunities to volunteer at this event even if we don't officially participate.  Here is the link to Facebook for this event or their website - https://slavicexperience.com/.

We have had the pleasure of a young woman, Abbey McDonald from Hibbing, MN who is our intern this Spring and she has been busy working on our list of Noteworthy Minnesota Croats and finding their pictures.  You can see the entire list here.  This is a growing list and we're happy to add to it so if you know of someone we should add, please let us know.  Abbey also interviewed the local Croatian Artist, Vesna Kittelson with a partial interview is included in our newsletter.  Her full interview will be in the Zajednicar in the future.

As we get closer to December, I will make a decision whether or not to hold our Annual Christmas Party depending on the the outcome of the virus.

As Governor Walz says in his television ads, "We'll get through this and come out stronger on the other side."  Croats are a hearty group.  We'll put this behind us soon enough.

My best to all - stay healthy!

Andrea Novak Neumann
Meet our newest summer intern from Hibbing, MN
Abbey McDonald
I am a Croatian American from Hibbing Minnesota.  I am currently a student at the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minnesota.  I have relatives in the Brinje area (Lika) of Croatia.  Personally, I have visited Croatia on three separate occasions.  My first trip was when I was eight years old and the other two trips were in the summers of 2013 and 2014.  I absolutely love my Croatian Heritage.  My grandfather, Bob McDonald is 50% Croatian, which makes me 1/8th Croatian.  My father's side of the family is very proud of our Croatian heritage.  Something that I believe is interesting to know about me is that I have two tattoos, both of which are in Croatian!

Vesna Kittelson Inteview
by Abbey McDonald
I had the pleasure of talking with Vesna Krezich Kittelson on April 21. Vesna grew up in Split, Croatia. Growing up, she said that Split provided her with “a beautiful archaeological inheritance.” Vesna described her artistic style as very contemporary in the sense that she is not loyal to one specific style. She said, “I would say that my style is of a contemporary thinker who is open to the world with personal questions.” Much of her career work has been transferred to the Weisman Art Museum’s Permanent Collection, at the University of Minnesota. The Minnesota State Arts Board gave Vesna a $10,000 grant to produce a book about her art. This book was published by Afton Press, a small Minnesota nonprofit press that presents Minnesota artists and culturally prestigious people. Her book is titled, “Synthesis-Lost and Found in America: The Art of Vesna Kittelson.” When I asked Vesna how her art was influenced by Split, she stated, “There are fragments of historical buildings, sculptures, mosaics, and old paintings everywhere around in Split. To me, they were fragments of previous times and people and that made me brave to make a fragments of contemporary faces and not the whole body.” One statement that Vesna holds important is, “Fragments are all around us.”

Croats living abroad urged not to visit Croatia
The Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs has issued a statement urging Croatian citizens who temporarily or permanently live and work outside the country to further delay all travel tot he Republic of Croatia which is not necessary.  This is obviously a fluid situation and is changing on a daily basis.  As always, the Croatian Embassy can provide you the most current status for travel to Croatia.

In addition, American Airlines has canceled service to Dubrovnik for all of 2020.  American Airlines summer service between Philadelphia and Dubrovnik was to run between June and October and will resume in 2021.
ROBERT JERIN - Famed Croatian Genealogist
We have approached Robert Jerin regarding teaching his Croatian Genealogy class here in So. St Paul sometime next year.  There is a minimum requirement of approximately 20 people to attend this event in order to break even. This all day class would cost around $60 per person.  Mr Jerin also includes  a copy of his book with his class.   If you would be interested, please email me at anovakneumann@comcast.net.
This is still on the table for 2021, however, I did not generate enough interest to secure him.  Only 5 or 6 people agreed to attend and we would need at least 20 people in order to break even.  If you are potentially interested and have not contacted me, please email me.
THANK YOU TO OUR GENEROUS SPONSORS.
PLEASE SUPPORT THEM WITH YOUR BUSINESS.
