A regular update highlighting and connecting work within International Development across the OU and beyond.

Our head start in adapting to the new reality

Recent weeks have seen a whirlwind of activity across The Open University as we adapt to the new reality of lockdown and social distancing.

Being a distance learning institution, powered by online and mobile technologies, has given us a considerable advantage.

Together with the hard work and ingenuity of staff, it has enabled our students to carry on studying, and our academics to carry on their research and to turn their skills to supporting government, the NHS and citizens in dealing with the crisis.

Researchers in International Development at the OU have been part of all this activity, and the range of our academic interests is reflected in the diverse insights into the impact of COVID-19 featured in this issue.

One focus for this activity is a new section of our website, called Social Scientific Research in the time of COVID-19, launching today. It employs the disciplines of social science and global studies to help us all better understand the unprecedented situation we face, and what may come out of it.

Alongside this, we’re happy to report that normal activities continue too: including another new free course, new research publications, and new opportunities. We hope that our readers will find some inspiration here in these challenging times.
