A Picture is Worth 1,000 Words

A common response from many people when talking about water on the Western Slope is that it is too complex to understand. Scientists discuss this issue using Excel spreadsheets and graphs, but the story of water in Colorado can be hard to explain.

However, who misses the story when we show the photo above?

This photo is of the delta where the Lower North Fork of the Colorado River empties into Shadow Mountain Reservoir. All the brown is sediment, much of which originated from breaches of the Grand Ditch twelve miles upstream.

This picture was taken with a drone.

Our mission as an organization is to tell the story of our Grand County rivers, streams, lakes and watersheds.

A drone is an invaluable aid to telling that story.

UCRWG is asking for your help to raise $5000 to purchase a drone that will enable us to tell that story. Photographs from the drone will be posted on our website and in our newsletter to better keep you, as citizens, informed.

Among other uses, the drone will be used to detect and monitor the cycle of algal blooms in our lakes and streams, and enable tracking of the spread of aquatic weeds to give indications of water quality.

With a drone, riparian habitats along streams, rivers and shorelines can be mapped to show how they change with water flows and climatic conditions. Sediment transport and plumes can be mapped to identify sources and impacted areas. The list goes on.

This technology is currently not being used in Grand County.

A drone would have enabled documentation of the chemical spill that occurred last fall at the mouth of the North Fork and its spread into Shadow Mountain Reservoir.

We don't want to let that happen again.

That's why we're asking for YOUR HELP in acquiring the tools to help us fully tell the story of what is happening in the Upper Colorado River Watershed.

Every drop in the bucket counts, so please DONATE TODAY to help us document the ongoing environmental issues in our watershed.

For donors who give $200 or more, UCRWG will provide the services of the drone to photograph your property or a special event.
