 TRENDING  For when you want to whip it, whip it good ~ If you've been following any of the internet trends lately you've heard of dalgona/whipped coffee and chances are you've probably made one too. "Times of unprecedented emotional stress not only require a physical outlet (kindly admit that 2019 you would've never taken the energy to whisk anything 400 times), but they also force us to become creative in ways we might ordinarily not be. And you know what we need when we've done something a bit outside of our norms? Sweet, sweet social media validation. Et voila, all you cool cats and kittens: We. are. all. whipping. everything. Dr. Luke Ayers, a psychology professor at Widener University, isn't surprised that such an effortful activity has caught on with kids (and, therefore, the rest of us). 'The thing that might not be as well-known is that the only thing more stressful than isolation is if animals — including humans — can see each other but not interact; that's actually more stressful than total isolation.' Gen Z is all up on TikTok watching each other do things but not being able to see or touch each other, and so they are more in need of an outlet than ever before."

 LIFESTYLE  For when there's no rush to switch up your style ~ We're getting pretty comfortable with function over fashion, and it appears that the trend might stick around for a while. "Fashion in the age of the coronavirus isn’t complicated. From loungewear sets to stacks of sweatpants, people are by and large reaching for what’s comfortable and practical. Anything that requires too much thinking — say, a dress with an actual zipper or pants with buttons — has generally been relegated to the part of your wardrobe that you’ll dig into once this is all over. Whenever that time comes, expect to see a range of ensembles on the street. 'I do believe we will dress up for special events,' Dawnn Karen, a fashion psychologist and author of Dress Your Best Life, tells Bustle. 'But work attire will become lax. At a psychological level, people will still be fraught with anxiety. This has scarred us, and this will affect how we present ourselves to the world externally due to the inner turmoil the pandemic has caused.' In the post-pandemic world, Karen hypothesizes that clothing and accessories will be viewed through the lens of safety and functionality, with aesthetics playing a secondary role."

 CULTURE  For when you bring campus life to you ~ With universities around the world closing their doors due to the pandemic, students are still determined to bring their college activities to life at home. "At school, for all our friends’ birthdays, we stay together in someone’s dorm room till the clock strikes midnight. Then at midnight, we sing happy birthday and dance and eat cake and stuff. So this was a Zoom call we did at midnight for my friend’s birthday ... We convinced my roommate Alex to let his sister shave his head. That’s me in the little box on the top left. We were chatting on Zoom and it was late, like 2 a.m., and we peer-pressured him. Shaving our heads at 2 a.m. is something we would’ve done if we were in our apartment in Brooklyn, too. Pretty normal behavior for us ... The head football coach at ASU, Herm Edwards, did a Zoom meetup with a bunch of journalism students and gave us all advice. He was really helpful. He said, 'What you are doing right now in quarantine with limited resources is what might actually set you apart when you are 27, 28 years old and you are trying to get that big job in the industry. Being in quarantine doesn’t mean you have to stop working. You can mess around and whittle this valuable time away or you can start investing in something you care about, like a personal project.' That inspired me."

 WELLNESS  For when you can bathe in mindfulness ~ Virtual sound baths are rising up as wellness trend you don't want to miss. Thanks to meditation classes now available online, you can now enjoy the full experience of it at home. "In normal times, this ancient meditative practice was considered one of the stranger, less essential wellness activities — who has time to lie down for an hour and listen to ambient beats and atmospheric whooshing noises? Well, today a lot more people do. Alongside Instagram Live yoga and meditation, the sound bath has emerged as the star of quarantine self-care. While sound baths are typically performed in groups, the experience lends itself particularly well to at-home practice: All you need is a pair of headphones and a place to lie down ... it all has to do with how sound travels in a space — in person, the sound waves are experienced both physically and mentally (think of how you might experience a full-body sensation when you’re at a concert with exceptionally high bass, for example), but digitally, it’s about how audio affects your brain waves. As long as you have good speakers or headphones, 'you can get to the point where you can untether your mind and experience a ripple effect in your nervous system.'"

  • Start by sitting on the ground, with your legs extended in front of you on the mat.
  • Place a Pilates ball about 1 foot behind your torso, and place both palms on top, fingertips facing away from you.
  • With control, slowly lower down, pressing the ball a few inches backward.
  • Return to start. That's one rep.
  • Complete 3 sets of 5 reps.
