tonight's pick-me-ups

Things we're doing to unwind and get cozy before bed tonight:

🪑 Perfecting our posture. Comfort and productivity are both greatly affected by how you sit, so reach for at home add-ons like a lumbar roll or a standing desk to help ease back and neck pain. *Bonus tip* stand up every hour to fire up your muscles and joints.

👯‍♀️ Widening our circle. There comes a point in quarantine when we've got nothing new to say. Welcome the company of
new friends through online groups like Heymama for working moms or Ellevate to meet other professional women all across the world.

🐘 Seeking out adventure.
Take a trip deep into the jungle with just a click. Many resorts and lodges across Africa are setting up virtual safari tours that allow you to explore wildlife throughout savannas, watering holes, and riverbeds.

💆‍♀️ Surviving and thriving.
Learn how to find joy, even amidst a global crisis. Be sure to schedule time to both worry and dream, experience and appreciate nature every day, and practice positive habits. #yougotthis

bedtime stories

Reads when you're up late anyway. Here are tonight's round-up for every occasion:

LIFESTYLE  For when we're going back to basics ~ 'Pantry meals' are dominating our feeds, and plenty of them are rooted in cooking simple and convenient recipes that were popular during the Great Depression: "'There's a kind of cherry-picking taking place where we're going back and finding novelty recipes that are kitschy in a way. And we feel like it's almost fun to go back and cook these historical recipe' ... 'There's one thing that I've seen which is really positive and really encouraging to me. I've seen bunches of articles by food writers that aren't so much looking at recipes but are trying to teach people basic laws of food and cooking. We're learning sort of how it all works — how to cook without a recipe, how to keep produce fresh longer, how to make substitutions. We're getting an education in how food works that's going to make us much better cooks if we can hang on to that.'"

HEALTH  For when you feel a sneeze coming on ~ FYI it's ramping up to be one of the worst years for allergies, making for a very anxious Summer. Catch a break by preparing yourself ahead of time: "With a shortage of COVID-19 tests, many people can’t be sure whether the pollen or the virus is behind their malaise. At the same time, it’s likely to be another brutal year for allergies across the United States. Texas is bracing for its worst allergy season in years. States like Georgia and New York have already seen near-record pollen counts. And in Washington, DC, pollen spiked surprisingly early this year. Regardless of your pollen of choice, the future holds more misery for allergy sufferers. And as the COVID-19 pandemic rages, it may be a long time before millions of Americans can breathe easy."

SELF  For when you still want some 'me' time ~ We might be stuck at home, but that doesn't mean we would pass up an easy out from video calls and Zoom happy hours: "Pandemic or no pandemic, innocuous white lies function as a social lubricant, allowing one to keep up an air of politeness while terminating conversations humanely. 'People lie because it works,' says Robert Feldman, a psychology professor at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and the author of The Liar in Your Life: The Way to Truthful Relationships. 'We’re all very susceptible to the lies of others, and in fact sometimes welcome those lies because it gives us a graceful way of interacting with other people' ... Even at a time when people have been deprived of their usual socializing, the accumulation of phone calls, FaceTime catch-ups, and Zoom happy hours can be exhausting. Between work, child care, and household chores, many of those currently cooped up at home have ample excuses for not socializing. But many others don’t, and just want to seem like they do."

TRENDING  For when you could use a getaway ~ Animal Crossing is quickly becoming a home away from home as we become obsessed with this wholesome game. Here's what to know before you hop on the bandwagon: "It’s so many of the things I wish I could do in person! You can wander around together just taking in the sights, and if your host is amenable, you can pick their fruit or catch fish together ... Every hangout I’ve done on AC has also been accompanied by a Zoom call so you can actually kind of interact in real life too. It’s a lot like life: Some people take the most pleasure in building enormous houses and amassing cool furniture, while others just enjoy fishing and collecting bugs. There’s not really a wrong way to do it. And it’s really nice to exist in a space where the rules of the universe are clear and predictable."

👌 THIS WEEK'S LIFE PRO TIP 👌
When your mental health isn't in the best state, give yourself a break.
Don't feel guilty for things you can't do. Normal things like eating, sleeping, or socializing may be difficult, but it's okay to struggle. Rest, recover, be kind to yourself, and know the bad times are temporary.
