tonight's pick-me-ups

Things we're doing to unwind and get cozy before bed tonight:

🎙️ Hooking up with history. Take a break from TikTok and listen to this podcast spotlighting seductresses throughout history. This week, Rachel and Arielle talk about the woman who led the only all-female group of ninja and used her feminine wiles to survive. Best paired with a glass of red.

🛍️ Channeling our inner Robin Sparkles. Bring the mall home and invite the besties too thanks to a
new social platform that allows you to shop online with friends. Think Netflix party for getting that yay or nay on a jumpsuit from the gals.

Pouring one in.
Add a twist to your Dalgona with a bit of booze and toast to finishing another week strong. The classics like Kahlua and Baileys work great or amp things up with a White Russian whipped coffee.

🏖️ Taking a staycation. Turn on the automatic replies and hit the backyard beach. Even in quarantine,
treat your vacation time as an opportunity to learn something new, binge that show you've been eyeing, or do nothing at all (tbh the best).

bedtime stories

Reads when you're up late anyway. Here are tonight's round-up for every occasion:

CAREER  For when it's a fine line between where work ends and 'me time' begins ~ Being on different schedules at home does us no favors on when to turn off work mode. Learn how to overcome feeling 'always on': "If any correspondence must happen outside of the set communication hours, such as for urgent or time-sensitive issues, make them phone or text only. This way people can comfortably close down all other communication channels like email, Slack, instant messenger, etc. The act of having to call or text someone is usually enough to give the sender a pause to think, 'Do I really need this person now, or can the communication wait?' This allows everyone on your team to work whenever is appropriate for them, but not feel like they have to work all the time to accommodate everyone else’s schedule. These challenging times don’t make downtime any less important. "

WELLNESS  For when the little moments bring us lots of joy ~ Maybe your sourdough turned out perfect or your dog learned a new trick. Take advantage of even the smallest things that still make your heart happy: "From a psychological perspective, happiness is a broader self-evaluation about how we feel about our life: how we feel about our work, our health, do we have meaning and purpose. Happiness is big — and vague. Joy is a simpler, more momentary experience of positive emotion, and you can access it at any time — even at a funeral! It’s harder to be happy right now but if we don’t allow moments of joy because we feel guilty, we’re missing out. Research shows that when we experience even small moments of joy it resets our cardiovascular response to stress, it helps us cope better, and eventually bounce back from crises."

RELATIONSHIPS  For when Love Island has nothing on quarantine dating ~ Sure we'd pick dating on a luxury villa any day, but virtual dating has its own ups that may stick around for the long-term: "Having your first date on a video call can relieve some of those jitters. For starters, there's far fewer decisions to be made — where to go, what to wear, and whether you'll meet over coffee, drinks, or a full-on dinner. 'Not that these are inherently stressful things, but there are a lot more decisions to be made. Since many of us are alone at home, it takes a lot of that angst out of planning.' Sex and dating coach Myisha Battle tells mbg that being home rather than going somewhere unfamiliar and searching a crowd for your date can also make you feel more comfortable. If you follow sports, think of it like the dating version of a home advantage."

LIFESTYLE  For when no plans means no FOMO ~ For many, it's the case that we're still missing out on Zoom happy hours or plain missing 'normal' life. An introvert and an extrovert discuss the pros/cons of socializing during a pandemic: "After the first few weeks, I realized that there was no reason to feel the usual FOMO that comes along with doing nothing because there’s nothing to miss out on — all anyone I know is doing right now is making TikTok videos or making banana bread. And it removed a lot of the social pressure that I’m used to experiencing. And it’s really made me embrace the art of doing nothing and prioritizing self-care, which is obviously such an immense privilege right now ... Or, I guess, missing the opportunity to feel FOMO. Or even, missing the presence of FOMO to which I don’t usually subscribe."
