The Pioneer News is your weekly update from the Pinetree PTA
Teacher Appreciation Week is this week -
May 4th through 8th

We think more than ever we appreciate all that the Pinetree Teachers do for our students.  Even though we're not together on campus, we should still celebrate the amazing Teachers we have at Pinetree.  The Pinetree PTA is working on a fun surprise for all of them but here are suggestions how you can also celebrate them from afar.
  • Have your child make or decorate a picture or card, or if your child can write a note then post it in their Google classroom for their teacher to enjoy.
  • If you would like to purchase a little something you can buy a e-gift card from your teacher's favorite place and send them their teacher email address. Please refer to their favorite lists on our website.  Link at the button below.
  • If you would like to show them some love or school spirit you can make posters to hang in front of the school (weather permitting). A PTA person will come take pictures each night and send emails to the teachers so they can see the creative pictures. The PTA has placed a bag of bag-ties on the fence near the school entrance to help hang your posters.
  • The school also thought it would be fun to have students write a message to their teacher and send it to either Mrs. Stilson or Mrs. Klahs through email and they will put together a short video.

Superintendent Updates as of 5/1/2020
Good Evening Sulphur Springs Families,

This is Dr. Catherine Kawaguchi, Superintendent, with your Friday Update, May 1, 2020.

As you may be aware, Governor Gavin Newsom made comments about a possible earlier start to the 2020-21 school year. I want you to know that our anticipated start date for the 2020-21 school year has not changed. We will continue to monitor communications that are coming from Sacramento. We are scheduled to begin school on August 13. Please know that district calendars take a great deal of planning and coordination among our staff. We will come to the best decision based upon maintaining student and staff safety with guidance from Los Angeles County Office of Education and the Public Health Department in determining when and how to return students to school.

As you are aware, our District has continued to take the necessary and challenging stepsneeded to support students and families through a Distance Learning environment. We are finding innovative ways to deliver instruction, and also are looking at grading practices to ensure all learners have the opportunity to succeed, and are not penalized in any way by our current grading policies.

For the End of the Year Report Card, an alternative grading practice is being implemented by our teachers.

• Standards covered will be marked on the report card with an asterisk.

• A detailed explanation in the comments section of the report card will be provided for parents, which summarize standards covered.

• Standards not covered during the last term will be left blank on the report card.

Staff are also finalizing details for families to pick-up their child’s personal items and school supplies left in classrooms. A schedule to pick up your child’s items will be emailed home and posted on our District website for each school on May 6th. Please note that the Distribution of student items will be Thursday May 14th or Friday, May 15th. You will be able to choose either day to go to your child’s school to pick up student items.

Finally, I want to remind families, that when you are picking up the free nutritional food at Canyon Springs and/or Mitchell Community Schools between 12:00PM and 1:00PM, we are asking families to please wear face masks to support in protecting staff and families.

Thank you for all that you are doing to partner with us!

New Principal at Pinetree for Next School Year

NOTICE FROM THE DISTRICT:

Dear Pinetree Families,

I am calling to inform you that Pinetree’s Principal Ms. Deb Stilson will be moving out of the area at the end of the school year, and therefore will not be returning as principal for the 2020-2021 school year.

Your child’s education and well-being are our most important priorities. One of our goals is to maintain consistency for the students and staff at Pinetree Community School through this transition as the community welcomes a new principal for the 2020-2021 school year. With this in mind, the selection process to establish a new principal for Pinetree Community School has begun.  We look forward to the completion of the hiring process before the end of the school year, and Ms. Stilson will be available to assist the new Principal to ensure a smooth transition.

The District is asking for you to complete a survey regarding what you feel are the needs for Pinetree Community School. Please go to Pinetree School’s website where you will find the link.

We thank you for your support as we work through the transition process.

Sincerely,

Dr. Catherine Kawaguchi

Superintendent

Box Tops to Support Pinetree PTA
During this time, you can still support the Pinetree PTA by continuing to scan your store receipts on the official box tops app and contributing them to Pinetree Community School.  We greatly appreciate your support.

There are some BIG changes happening to one of the easiest ways to raise money for Pinetree School. For every Box Top that is turned in, Pinetree earns 10 cents. They add up, and already this year, we have collected $765 for our students. However, how you collect Box Tops has changed this yearit has gone digital!

Box Tops is slowly transitioning to no longer printing Box Tops on the packaging of products, that is why it is so important to download the app and start scanning. However, until then, please keep clipping and sending any Box Tops that you may find. We will be earning money for Pinetree both ways.  We suggest anytime you go food shopping, go ahead and scan that receipt in the app.  The app will look at each of the items and do the work for you to see if any of the items qualify for a box top and automatically contribute it to Pinetree.  Please note you have to scan the receipt within 14 days of the purchase.

Check out the video below for more information on this change:
See how easy it is to earn for your school with the NEW Box Tops App! Watch this how-to video to for a simple, step-by-step explanation of how it works—then give it a try yourself.
Amazon Smile
During this difficult time, it's becoming more common to make online purchases especially through vendors like Amazon.  Please consider using Amazon Smile to support Pinetree Community School while making that purchase.  We greatly appreciate it.

Do you shop through Amazon?  If so, do it through AmazonSmile and Amazon will donate a percentage of every purchase to Pinetree PTA. AmazonSmile is the same Amazon you know. Same products, same prices, same service. Instead of going directly to the amazon.com url when shopping, book mark https://smile.amazon.com and choose one time that you want to support "Pinetree Community School PTA" and everytime you shop through that link going forward, you're supporting your child's school.  It's as easy as that!

Also, Good news! AmazonSmile is now available in the Amazon Shopping App to all AmazonSmile customers using supported Android devices.

If you are an AmazonSmile customer, you can now support Pinetree Community Elementary PTA in the Amazon shopping app on your Android device! Simply follow these instructions to turn on AmazonSmile and start generating donations.
  1. If you have the latest version of the Amazon Shopping App, open the App on your Android device.
  2. View Settings and select AmazonSmile.
  3. Follow the in-App instructions to complete the process.
If you do not have the latest version of the Amazon Shopping App, update your App. Click here for instructions.

AmazonSmile is not currently available for iOS users. We will notify everyone when it becomes available.
