American School of Valencia prepares globally-conscious, life-long learners in an innovative, collaborative, and caring environment

Special Issue
Wednesday, April 29, 2020

Dear ASV Families:

The Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, announced a plan on April 28, 2020 to reduce social distancing restrictions in multiple phases over the next two months. In order to provide you with timely and the most accurate information that we have at the time of writing this letter, please see some links that summarize these multiple phases of reducing the social distancing restrictions: Official Press Release and El Pais Article.

What are the implications for schools and ASV?

According to these reports and considering that attaining each phase may vary depending on each region’s situation, regular classes at ASV will not begin in Spain until September 2020.  However, it seems ASV may be able to operate our Preschool program in a modified form that is still to be clarified by the government.

The regulations currently state that if Spain and/or Valencia reaches the planned phase 2 by May 25, 2020, and “both parents show proof of having to go back to work on site”, then our Preschool children could possibly attend class on campus in June with a number of health and safety restrictions. In addition, we are attempting to verify with governmental authorities if we can conduct any other small group academic activities for other areas of the school in June. Please understand that any re-opening of the school will need to be carefully planned and in accordance with all governmental requirements.

In July, the Spanish government is hopeful that living conditions will return to the “new normal”, including precautions such as masks and reduced capacity at social events. Although there is some new information available from the government, we are still left with many questions about what ASV can do in June and July. We will be requesting additional clarification from the Valencian government about these regulations and their application to our school programs.  As always, we will keep you posted as we gain more factual information. You can be assured that ASV is continually adapting to be prepared to make the most beneficial decisions for our students and their families.

Kind regards,

Director

Michael L. Smith
