Diego's Make it Happen Project - Texas Diaper Bank
|
|
Hi SOSers,
My name is Diego Robbins. I am a junior at STEM @ LEE High School and have been involved with SOS for many years now. In such uncertain times, it is our duty as volunteers to continue to make the world and community a better place, and what better way for me to contribute than to launch a new Make It Happen Initiative Project. My project centers around gathering donations for the Texas Diaper Bank, a non-profit organization that supplies families in need with diapers, formula, bottles, and other essential infant-care products. In light of the global COVID-19 outbreak and the massive unemployment that it has brought, the Texas Diaper Bank is running low on supplies due to the increasing number of families relying on it for infant-care products.
Here is how the project will work:
-
Some of our amazing SOS volunteers have graciously allowed me to put diaper collection bins at their houses
-
For a two week period, these bins will be out in their front lawns for anybody to drive up and drop off any donation items (5/17-5/31)
-
At the end of the two weeks, I, along with a few other SOS volunteers, will pick up all of the donations and take them to the Texas Diaper Bank headquarters
-
All of this will result in Texas families who are struggling right now to not have to worry as much about where they will get their diapers from
What to donate:
-
All diaper and accompanying infant-care products would be much appreciated, but the Texas Diaper Bank specifically requested diapers of sizes 3, 5, and 6, baby shampoo, baby body wash, baby brushes and comb set and or baby thermometers
- You can also donate via the Diaper Bank's Amazon wishlist and show SOS proof for the service hour credit.
These are the donation bin locations:
-
The Paustian family residence - 24918 Birdie Ridge (Timberwood Park area)
-
The Zavala family residence - 714 Lorimor Court, gate code: 1600 (Stone Oak area)
-
The Robbins family residence - 2642 Pebble Breeze (281 and 1604 intersection area)
-
The Palmisano family residence - 1403 Blackbird Lane (Churchill area)
Note: We still have two collection bins available, so if anybody would like to use their house as a donation site, please let me know by Sunday, May 10 at (210)-784-9772, or diego.d.robbins@gmail.com First come first serve!

Making Personal Masks for Donation
The idea to make a homemade mask was created by fellow SOS student, Araceli. Students would be responsible for making homemade DIY face masks made from cloth and donating them to those who need them. You and your family can work on this project and SOS will log that time as volunteer hours in our system, after you submit your hours and pictures of your work.
Upon completion of your mask, please email Mr. Samandi, at amir@sossanantonio.org.

Conversing with an English as a Second Language (ESL) Student
SOSers!
We have an exciting opportunity available! We are in need of students that are willing to have conversations with an ESL student via FaceTime, or Skype, or WhatsApp. We are looking to fill slots of half an hour each where you will be given a topic of conversation and simply have a dialog with this person. This will require a permission slip from your parent. There is a link at the bottom for the permission slip.
Please send a picture of your permission slip to ruwani@sossanantonio.org. Once I receive this, you will be put in touch with Ms. Sherry Mathews for the next step.

While we wait to explore the world again, do you want to become a digital explorer?
I challenge you to pick a destination you already visited or would like to visit and create a digital product to be shared on social media for all us to explore the world with you.
Your digital product can earn you service hours upon sharing it with me. Here are some suggestions for products:
-
A traveling video you created (2 minutes min) 2 hrs of service, each additional minute earns you another hour- upload and share via YouTube. Your video should highlight the countries culture, people and traditions, and some basic geographical facts.
-
A digital travel poster ½ hour of service
-
A digital cookbook with recipes and photos 3 hours of service
-
A digital scavenger hunt 3 hours of service
-
Teaching a traditional dance or cultural art project via video 3 hours
If you have your own ideas, email me a short proposal of your ideas and I let you know how many service hours you can earn,
Your contribution and/or proposals need to be submitted through Explore Manager Marion Torres at marion@sossanantonio.org .
All products should be shared by no later than April 27,2020.
