UUFB Virtual (and Actual) Office Hours

In this time, we’re adjusting office hours and schedules drastically! As we’ve noted elsewhere, for the time being Rev. Lori and Nick are working from home. They will both be in the UUFB office on Wednesday mornings. This allows us to process mail received at our P.O. Box and do anything else that needs to happen on our campus. If you send your pledge payment via the post office, please send it to the P.O. Box! We do NOT receive mail sent to our street address.

    UUFB
    P.O. Box 593
    Beaufort, SC 29901

Rev. Lori will still take Monday as her Sabbath day. She will be generally available for phone calls Tuesday through Friday, except when participating in Zoom meetings for UUFB or her continuing education classes. She will be checking in with members via phone and email as her schedule permits, as well as continuing the spiritual practices that help keep her grounded. You can reach her at her cell number, which is in the directory (in the Members Only section of the UUFB website: uubeaufort.org).

Nick will be generally available to UUFB members from noon to 5pm on Monday through Thursday, and will check email daily. He can be reached at his cell number, which has been listed in the directory for the duration of these changes.

Women's Breakfast Resuming via Zoom

The Women's Breakfast will be held Thursday, May 7th at 9:00am via Zoom! Please contact Kate Hudson for a Zoom link if you want to join us!

Social & Environmental Justice Committee

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to impact our community, many of our neighbors are still unemployed and unable to feed their families.  The SEJ Committee is please to share that Second Helpings, is accepting donations of non-perishable food, which can be dropped off at the Grayco parking lot on Lady’s Island in Beaufort.  The Second Helping truck is in their parking lot.

You can leave the non-perishable food inside the back of the Second Helpings truck. The back of the truck will be open (unlocked). Second Helpings will then deliver this food to food distribution centers across Beaufort County, such as the one at Penn Center.  Second Helpings' commitment is that all food placed in the Greyco trucks will be distributed within Beaufort County.

Monetary donations are also being accepted by Second Helpings. For more information visit secondhelpingslc.org.  Let’s help feed our neighbors and their families!  Thank you.

All the Colors! All the Flowers! - Note The Deadline!

It’s almost time for our annual Flower Communion service! While we may not be able to meet in person, we can still celebrate flowers and our UUFB community!

Last week I asked people for photos of flowers, for a special slide show for the flower communion. I’ve received a number of photos, and thank you to all who’ve sent some in! And, there’s still room for more! So, if you haven’t yet sent in a photo (or several) of flowers, please do so!

It would also be great to have some photos of our members for this slide show, because – as most of us know – the flower communion is about community! If you have an electronic photo or two of you, you and your partner/family, and would be okay sharing it with the Fellowship, please share!

Flowers can be perfect, or ragged, cultivated or wild, even gone to seed. All are beautiful!

**Thank you again to everyone who sent in flowers! The more the merrier, and there is a deadline: Sunday, May 3, 2020. (Yes, this coming Sunday!)

Chair Yoga ZOOMING To You!

Yes, our Chair Yoga Class will come to you again this week,  live via ZOOM.   So, pull up a chair, make sure you have downloaded Zoom,  adjust your computer, tablet or phone and join the class.  I would encourage you to sign in a bit earlier than 10:30 to make sure your technology and set up are working well. Please bring a tennis ball or some other small ball and something you can use as a block, either a book or a folded towel.

We will meet at our regular time:  10:30-11:45 Tuesdays
Here is your link:  https://uuma.zoom.us/j/630127948

Looking forward to seeing you then.  Also, if you know others who might benefit from this class during this stressful time, please feel free to send this message to them and invite them to join the class.

Looking forward to seeing you then.
Kathy Folsom

Coronavirus Prevention!

Your UUFB Care Committee reminds you of the basics:

There is still no vaccine to prevent corona virus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) always recommends everyday preventive actions to help prevent the spread of respiratory diseases, including:

•    If you or a loved one develop symptoms, follow the advice of local health officials regarding when to seek care.
•    Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
•    Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
•    Stay home when you are sick. (And for now, stay home except for necessary trips.)
•    Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
•    Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.
•    Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after using the bathroom, before eating, and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
•    If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Always wash hands with soap and water if hands are visibly dirty.
•    Follow the CDC’s recommendations for using a facemask:
•  The CDC now DOES recommend that people who are well (appear well) wear a facemask to protect themselves and others from COVID-19. Here’s a link for updates on facemasks.
•    Follow local health advice regarding school closures, avoiding crowds, and other social distancing measures. For additional information, visit https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-nCoV/index.html or call 1-800-232-4636.

To Be Continued…
a column by Rev. Lori G. Hlaban

Dear Ones,

I am loving the photos members and friends are sending in of themselves and of flowers! See the separate article in this Headline News for more information. The deadline to send in photos is this Sunday, May 3, 2020.

We are still holding Zoom midweek check ins! Beginning this Friday, May 1st, the Friday check in will continue as before, in an open conversation style. Beginning next Wednesday, May 6th, the Wednesday evening check in will be more structured, as a brief vespers service, followed by open conversation. Links are at the website, the UUFB Beloved Community Forum, and this newsletter.

I’m happy that many have managed to attend our online worship services, and several more have stayed connected through the midweek check-ins, and chair yoga. I hope some are setting up Zoom happy hours with other members – or virtual dinners together!

Thank you for being here, for being part of this Fellowship, and for staying connected!
I love you. You are beloved and precious. We will get through this. Stay safe, everyone.

    Blessings,
        Rev. Lori Hlaban

Important Stewardship Update

Our members and friends were very generous in our fall 2019 campaign.  They pledged over $130,000, making the goal we set.  So thank you to all who pledged to support the fellowship!

It’s now April 2020 and our world has profoundly changed.  The COVID-19 virus has made our daily routines much different.

Paying your pledge is more important than ever.  Since we are not currently meeting on Sundays, that means we are also not collecting pledges or donations that are usually dropped in the basket by members, friends and visitors.  So please make sure to keep up with paying your pledges!

In addition, if you are financially able to contribute above your pledge, we would be very grateful.  Even if you did not pledge, but would like to help with sustaining our fellowship, please donate via any of the options below.
  1. “Donate” button on the UUFB website.
  2. Mail a check to the fellowship:  P O Box 593; Beaufort, SC 29901.
  3. Drop off a check in the mail slot at Fellowship Hall.
  4. Have your bank send a check through your online Bill Pay service.
  5. Stock transfer.
(Please indicate in the check memo whether it is towards your pledge or a general/non-pledge donation.)

Members of the Financial Advisory Committee have committed to making additional donations above their pledge to get the ball rolling.  We hope that you will join us in helping the fellowship in these trying times.  Pulling together will help the fellowship and its congregants thrive.

We know that some members and friends will not be able to contribute during this pandemic crisis and that is understood.  You are appreciated and we all look forward to better days.  However, you may be one of the lucky few and do not need the upcoming stimulus money for yourself or you family.  If you fall into this category, then please look into your heart and consider donating a part of this to your congregation.  Most of the expenses at the fellowship are fixed and do not vary, whether we are there or not.  Anything you donate will be greatly welcomed.

Take care, please be safe and stay healthy!

    Warmest regards,
        Grace M Drake
