A Message from AISS Scholars Team 3:

Keeping up in school and daily life has been difficult because COVID-19, but AISS’ scholars hope this letter reaches everybody well! While medical staff is hard at work all over the world, there are a few things we can do to help them.

In Scholar Team 3, we have been careful not to go outside unless absolutely necessary. While we cannot leave home otherwise, the scholars have enjoyed not waking up so early! Every student still tries keeping some sort of schedule in place to finish work before due dates for extracurricular activities and school. Despite the technical difficulties we experience as we settle into this new way of life, everybody has been staying on track.

Advanced Placement exams are coming up, and while it may make some students nervous, others are overjoyed that the exam will be a shortened, online version. Some colleges will still be accepting this shortened version too as college credit completion. Fortunately, SAT and ACT tests have been postponed until further notice at no cost.

Like many other classes and programs, AISS has continued doing meetings over the popular app Zoom. We are working on a project concerning the current pandemic. Each team will research a different aspect of the pandemic and come up with a potential solution. We have also continued to have guest speakers in our meetings.

The New Normal: AISS holds class over Zoom

While it may be hard to find the energy to work, contact loved ones, do hobbies, taking time to reflect has helped inspire the scholars. Stay positive everybody! I know we will get through this.

Most students go to college because it is expected of them. I want to go to college because I will be the first person in my family to go to college in the United States. My parents have attended college, but that was in Mexico, and the process is different.

Since as early as I can remember, I have always had people around me telling me to pursue a college career that I am passionate about and it motivated me to want to find a career in the medical field. Knowing that I want to help others is another key factor that motivated me to pursue a medical career. Biomedical engineering is an interesting major for me because in this field, you can use principles of design for medical and healthcare purposes.

Although biomedical engineering appeals to me at this moment in time, I have always been fascinated by careers that relate to the mind. Careers like psychology and neurosurgery have been on my mind since elementary school, because that was when I was first exposed to these types of career paths. The human brain and its functions have always interested me because the mind is capable of concocting various actions, whether they may be despicable or genius. I have always had freewill to pursue any way of life I please, but since my parents both sacrificed their college careers and immigrated to the United State for their family, I feel the responsibility to achieve a successful college career.

AISS has taught me how to be open in order to make connections that could benefit me in the future.

Angela Casillas
AISS Class of 2019
Growing up as a commuter in high school, my emotions and identity were constantly undulating  from my two hour long rides to school and back home. When applying to universities, I took this characteristic of schooling seriously when determining candidates for the next four years. I was constantly in search of a school that promised spirit and a few miles of distance from home. I wanted constant inspiration in a place that would ultimately mold me into the ideal version of myself. I decided to choose the University of California, Irvine (UCI).

My first few days were laid-back, which made it feel easier to start my college journey. I was surprised by the little amount of work and the authoritative yet friendly attitude my professors had. I quickly adapted to the quarter system and was excited to start off my law classes. I was mesmerized by the difference in teaching from high school to college. Every lecture was an essay that came to life, which not only taught me rudimentary information about the course but subliminally taught me the significance of organization when posing an argument.

I began to research more about the current topics in my lecture and seminar class and began to see the connection between music, art, and history. The excitement, shock, and realization I felt only furthered my strength in these subjects, which is something I would encourage for many others to search for and as my main reason for wanting to educate others. As a returning Alumni of AISS Class of 2019, I hope to advance as a mentor in order to make students become aware of the role they can play in society as well as become more in tune with the world around them.
