8th Annual Co-Occurring Live Video Conference: “A Relational Approach to Care”

This conference emphasizes the power of relationships when providing integrated care for people with mental health and substance use issues.

Questions can be directed to: cgadient@mhresources.com

Conference Objectives:
• Identify how relational dynamics (including maladaptive ways of connecting) contribute to the individual’s experience of substances, the impact on the reward circuitry, and the transmission of intergenerational trauma.

• Discuss a relational approach for helping people with Borderline Personality Disorders that not only targets problematic behavior and teaches skills, but also examines patterns of behavior developed throughout a person’s lifespan. This approach represents an alternative to DBT, which has dominated the clinical landscape.

• Explore common threads and challenges with pain and opioid use disorders, discuss the lack of effectiveness of opioids analgesic medications in treating chronic pain, and identify the benefits methadone/buprenorphine.

• Engage in a wellness activity during the lunch break.

• Learn how the Sanctuary Model is used in trauma-informed care and offers professionals a roadmap toward developing a recovery milieu that supports the healing process for the helper as well as the individuals they serve.

• Develop a greater understanding of the role of peer services, including the training and certification process, challenges for peers, and their supervision needs.

• Discuss the needs of family members/concerned others of those we serve. Identify guidelines to help them be more effective with their loved ones, while also focusing on self-care.

• Learn community-based interventions to help people with co-occurring issues that emphasize the power of engagement, create a vision of recovery, build in action steps, and support accountability.
