From Julie

Seems like Term 2 has started with lots of enthusiasm for learning from both students and staff.  Routines are being established and life is becoming almost predictable in these strange times. Mostly the feedback has been that Seesaw is a big improvement on what we trialled last term. We had some teething issues with Seesaw and Zoom at the beginning of the week which staff and, in particular, Owen, have helped us work through. Owen has been doing a mountain of work to support us in the background to meet these current challenges and I want to again publicly thank him for his skill, flexibility and his positive ‘can do’ attitude and contribution. Each step has been a learning experience and together we work well as a learning community supporting each other. If one never makes mistakes, then one is not likely to be learning much. The Micro School has started up again on an as needs basis so please remember to contact me on 0427 679 823 or Julie.leitch@cottageschool.tas.gov.au with at least a week’s notice if you are an essential worker and need this service for your child.

You may have noticed a lot of turmoil in the media in recent days re: the difference of opinion between the State authorities and the Commonwealth about planning for a return to classrooms and who should be directing this. Independent Schools have been caught in the middle of this spat to some extent but fortunately we are not in a position where we need to beg from the Commonwealth for a forward payment so we can comfortably comply with our State leadership in relation to this health issue. Based on what our State Minister for Education and Premier are saying, for the time being, we are expecting that Term 2 will be ‘learning from home’ with the Micro School available for those that need it.  This is in line with current State Government information as of April 30th. However, as you are all aware, this advice could change based on new evidence being available. Cont'd in right hand column...

I monitor developments constantly and we will be discussing our plan for deciding when to re-open the school at our Committee meeting at 7pm on 20th May.  To facilitate our usual practice of welcoming community to Committee we will, in these special times, send a Zoom meeting invite to the whole school community to attend. It was fabulous last Committee when we had 32 Zoom windows running so cooperatively and respectfully.

Stay inside, stay safe and try not to stress too much if at all possible. Regards, Julie
