iapsREN activities
The novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has led to a new way of living and working for almost all of us. We at iapsREN hope that you are managing as well as you can in these circumstances, and that you are still finding opportunities for restoration. With most of us now working from home, the need to maximise restoration indoors is greater than ever. Don’t forget to put some plants in your new home office or even just look out of the window at the sky.
The next International Association for People-Environment Studies (IAPS) Conference is fast approaching. In light of the COVID-19 outbreak, this year’s IAPS will be virtual, running 21-26 June (Quebec City time zone). The organising committee is working hard to ensure that the virtual conference provides an engaging experience with live presentations and questions and ‘innovative remote social events’. IAPS organisers are surveying presenters and interested attendees to help them rapidly re-plan the event, so please take part. We look forward to meeting up in virtual space in June.
A reminder that we are seeking feedback on our own iapsREN website and communications. We have set up a very short survey to find out what we could change or improve - please help us by taking part here.

Call for papers
- Journal of Environmental Psychology will offer rapid evaluations of manuscripts that offer any environmental psychology perspectives on the COVID-19 pandemic, from risk perception to the role of spaces & places in self-isolation, disaster resilience, coping, & recovery and nudges to change behaviour. Authors should mention in the cover letter that the manuscript is being submitted for rapid review.

Research Fellow in Applied Psychology, University of Surrey

Description: We are excited to advertise a postdoctoral position for a two-year project in partnership with The Whiteley Foundation for Ageing Well. This project aims to encourage nature-engagement among older people to support their health and wellbeing. This will be done by developing nature-conservation activities with older people that are tailored to their needs and abilities. All data will be collected at Whiteley Village, a thriving retirement village which houses approximately 500 residents, and is set in 225 acres of beautiful natural gardens and woodland. This project aims to encourage use of this outdoor space to help support the health and wellbeing of residents. The postholder will work with residents, local gardening teams and members of the management team to develop the interventions and test their impact on a range of outcomes such as residents’ mood, cognitive functioning, sense of purpose, levels of social contact and physical activity.

The photo accompanying this newsletter is supplied by Dr. Stephanie Wilkie, Associate Professor in Environmental Psychology at University of Sunderland, UK. She writes:
“My research interests focus on the influence of urban green space and built environments on wellbeing, particularly through the lens of individual place preference and social identity. My interest in Environmental Psychology was sparked when I was a volunteer research assistant during my undergraduate degree, working on projects related to gender differences in spatial cognition and wayfinding. I continued this work in my thesis project at Indiana University, where I obtained a PhD in 2001. During my studies, I was able to study social science research methods, very different to traditional US experimental psychology, and behavioural geography. In hindsight, studying these topics provided an invaluable foundation for a career in academia.
The landscape in North East England provides endless settings for restoration and inspiration for my research. However, the image is actually from Chicago, one of my favourite cities. I chose this because it captures the interesting ways in which nature and urban forms compliment each other.”
