Sibs update April 2020

As lockdown continues, we think of the 1.7 million adult siblings and half a million young siblings in the UK who have grown up with a disabled brother or sister. We are here for you and your families. Remember you are not alone – stay in touch with us on Twitter, Facebook or get in touch at info@sibs.org.uk

National Siblings Day raises a smile
April 10th was National Siblings Day and we were overwhelmed at the response on social media. We have loved hearing your sibling stories and seeing family photos. In need of a positive boost? Scroll back through our Twitter and Facebook to catch up!

Young siblings at home
Young siblings tell us it’s the small, daily doses of attention that really help. Self-care for adult siblings
Adult siblings of disabled people can have a hard time looking after themselves, but now more than ever we must all take very good care of ourselves. Key advice for adult siblings of people with learning disabilities and/or autism
  • UK Coronavirus rules have been relaxed for people with learning disabilities/autism. You can accompany your disabled brother/sister on their daily exercise, even if you do not live with them – read more here
  • SCIE have a very useful hub of information here with all the current guidelines in one place
  • You can still visit your brother/sister in hospital in England if they have a learning disability/autism/dementia/mental health condition and would be distressed if you were not present – read more here
We will continue to update our coronavirus advice and information for adult siblings as often as we can.

Our parent workshops are going online!
In response to the current situation, we have now developed a short introductory online workshop for parents on the needs of siblings of disabled children. If your parent group or organisation would be interested in having this workshop delivered – please get in touch with us at info@sibs.org.uk to discuss.

Ask the Expert
This month we were delighted to be part of Mencap’s online community answering questions about siblings. There was a range of queries from parents and adult siblings and it was great to have new siblings make contact with Sibs for the first time.  The online question and answer session has  now closed, but if you would like to have a look at the topics raised and responses – you can check it out here.

Take part in the 2.6 challenge for Sibs!
Sunday 26th April was the day the Virgin Money London Marathon was due to take place. In its place, you can help raise money for Sibs by holding a sponsored event around the numbers 26 or 2.6. There are tons of fun ideas that you can do from home in this Virgin Money Giving activity pack and you can set up your own fundraising page for Sibs here. We really appreciate all and any support you can offer at such a difficult time. Don’t forget to tell us what you get up to – we’d love to hear from you and see pictures too! Tweet, post or email info@sibs.org.uk

Please take care.  Stay safe.
