Dear Friends,

Here in Pittsburgh, we’re just reaching the end of Week #7 (!!!) of working remotely; I hope this note finds you well and maybe even settling into a bit of a new normal. Probably like everyone, we’ve had some up days and some down days at CNF, but recently it feels like we’ve hit our stride, and I’m happy to report that we’ve been able to limit layoffs and keep staff working … thanks to your help.

You may have seen that we’re running a Spring Sale right now, with 50% off back issues of CNF, single copies of True Story for just $1, and discounts on subscriptions (and renewals) to Creative Nonfiction. Running a sale has brought us a small sense of normalcy, and we thought maybe you could use some fresh reading material (and a break from the internet). As an added bonus, shipping physical magazines helps support the United States Postal Service—we definitely need them to be around for the long haul.

We’re also thinking of other small businesses that could use some extra love right now—indie bookstores in particular. May is both National Nurses Month and Mental Health Awareness Month, and we happen to have published some excellent essay collections about those subjects.

We've partnered with our friends at White Whale Bookstore, who have built a special shelf of In Fact Books titles over at Bookshop.org, which is a wonderful new way to buy books online. They share sales revenue with independent bookstores, publishers, and authors and handle all the shipping and fulfillment of the books.

For those of you looking for other ways to stay connected with CNF, the next few weeks are shaping up to be busy:

Again, thank you for your ongoing support. We’re so grateful for everyone who has signed up for courses or ordered magazines and subscriptions, and we hope our programming has been able to help make this difficult time a little bit easier.

Managing Editor

In Fact Books on Bookshop.org

May is National Nurses Month & Mental Health Awareness Month

All things being equal, May is one of our favorite months. Not only does the weather begin to turn for the better here in Pittsburgh, but it's also the time to focus on some truly extraordinary individuals, including nurses, teachers, and those whose lives have been affected by mental illness.

To celebrate National Nurses Month + Mental Health Awareness Month, we've partnered with our friends at White Whale Bookstore, who have built a special shelf of In Fact Books titles over at Bookshop.org.

Here are a few of our recent favorites:

@miche1ewith1L: To lose a grandmother during a pandemic is to bake her chocolate chip cookies with missing ingredients. It is to swap her walnut chunks for my almond slivers; to pluck chocolate morsels from two - now naked - granola bars and fold them into the heap of buttery dough.

@RemmersVanessa: Each night the man who lives across the street turns off his overhead lights and turns on the purple wiring he has draped across the counters, desks, TV stand. “Purple Rain” plays on the 60-inch screen, and the place beats color onto the sidewalk below.

11:44 AM · Apr 14, 2020

@MPMcCune2: Looking at robins through binoculars is like staring at a word until it no longer looks familiar. The markings around their eyes and the fan of their tail feathers seen up close turn them into strangers.

6:49 PM · Apr 15, 2020

@evorbachcollins: I especially miss the dancing. Tomorrow, instead of watching the six-o-clock news, I’m going to push back the sofa and put on some music. Then later, after he’s gone to bed, I’ll watch the late news alone, cursing quietly, so not to wake him.
