Research Bulletin - April 2020 (Issue 50)

As part of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) response, 55 research projects to increase understanding of the virus, screen potential treatments and support clinical trials will benefit from almost £5 million of funding from the Scottish Government's Chief Scientist Office. The funding will support rapid research projects in 15 Scottish universities and research institutions, contributing to global efforts to combat the virus and its wider effects.

It follows a briefing from Interim Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Dr Gregor Smith which outlined the significant research efforts underway across Scotland; with acknowledgement and thanks to both the research community, for its pace of work and outstanding commitment, and the patients and families supporting this vital work.

As of April 2020, over 10 prioritised clinical studies are underway in Scotland across primary care, hospital settings and ICU’s with a further 4 in set up phase. This is a rapidly moving area with additional studies being reviewed and approved through a single national UK prioritisation process led by the National Institute of Health Research. Scotland is actively participating in this process with Chief Scientist, Professor David Crossman outlining the role of Scotland in this group in the latest issue of Holyrood Magazine. This recognises the importance of coordinated efforts to gather reliable evidence, prevent duplication of efforts and harness the infrastructure and expertise we have in Scotland.

Stay safe and be assured we are here to do all we can to support our NHS, our colleagues and partners across the world at this time.
