Hi <<First Name>>,

Things that have never happened before seem to be happening all the time. Over the past month the news has been dominated by headlines that would have seemed unbelievable at the beginning of the year. We’re inundated with new records in every competition we wanted no part of; the largest mass shooting, highest jump in infections, biggest jobless claims, fastest declines into a bear market, the list goes on... The firehose of information is on full blast and it’s exhausting to take it all in. To say that we’re living in a state of heightened anxiety is an understatement.

At any point in Canadian history, we would have been heartbroken and enraged by the violence that unfolded in here in our beautiful Nova Scotia last weekend, but it’s made worse by the fact that it happened now. Physical distancing makes grieving almost impossible and we’re already stressed out and afraid of everything happening around us. It’s no surprise that in Nova Scotia that collective stress came to a head last Friday when a series of misunderstandings sent the province in to a panic. Reports of another active shooter prompted the RCMP to utilize the Emergency Alert System. A short time later, we got the “all clear” from RCMP. It all turned out to be nothing but construction noise and misunderstandings.

There’s a long list of things that we took for granted before the lockdown. Most of us can think of things that we can’t wait to get back to; travel, sports, restaurants, gyms, concerts, getting together with friends and loved ones. Heck, some people even miss their commute and their office, but there’s one thing that tops that list, and that’s the feeling of being safe.

It’s easy to turn a factory back on but it’s a lot harder to get back to normal when people are still worried about personal safety - that’s what will signal the all clear for most of us. Let’s all hope to usher in those days sooner rather than later.

In the meantime... Stay the Blazes home!
