Calgary is a great place to make a living and make a life. Planning & Development is continuing to support our local economy and the aspirations of landowners by processing planning applications and building permits. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we are adapting how we conduct our day-to-day work. We are still open for business, with a focus on great service for our customers and building great communities together.

New application intake process starts May 1

Planning & Development remains committed to processing development applications during the State of Emergency. We want you to know how much we appreciate your flexibility to adapt to the changes we've been implementing since mid-March.

Starting Friday, May 1, we’re introducing a new digital intake process for large scale development permits, land use amendment applications and outline plans. To submit these application types online, call the Planning Services Centre at (403) 268-5343 and work directly with an agent to complete the intake process.

Before you call, please consider the following:
  • Allow up to 45 minutes to process your application over the phone.
  • Please have all digital files organized and ready to upload at the agent’s instruction.
  • Files will be transmitted securely via Microsoft OneDrive and reviewed during the call.
  • All documents must be named as per City of Calgary building and development lists and forms (CARLs) naming conventions to make document types easy to identify.
  • All files must be in PDF format. Please create one PDF file for each requirement.
Development Approvals staff will keep files moving forward to support your business and Calgary’s economy. If you’ve submitted an application that may need significant changes related to uncertain future market conditions, please connect with your File Manager and we will work with you to put it on hold.

As well, all approval bodies continue to operate on their previously published schedules – the Development Authority, Calgary Planning Commission and Council. Meanwhile we continue exploring and improving opportunities for virtual participation in public hearings.

Thank you for your cooperation and understanding during this challenging time. We send you our best wishes and will continue to keep you informed through these special editions of the Dispatch Newsletter as things evolve. If you have any concerns or questions, please email us at approvals@calgary.ca.

Covid-related renovations must comply with building safety standards

To prevent the spread of COVID-19, some senior’s care centres are taking measures such as restricting entrance ways, creating isolation rooms and altering ventilation systems. While these may be responsible approaches to mitigate the risk of spreading the virus, there's a concern that some changes may negatively affect a building's safety requirements.

Building owners or management companies undertaking interior renovations to isolate COVID-positive residents, are strongly encouraged to consult with a building architect or professional engineer to ensure the building remains safe for residents and staff. Life safety measures must be maintained, or alternatives provided, that meet or exceed safety standards.

Call The City's Planning department at (403) 268-5311 to discuss building and fire code requirements, or chat with us online.
