MARY ZERAN STUDIO

May Newsletter 2020
Hello Everyone, Hello!!!

Yesterday was a sad and happy because it was my last day in the temporary studio. As many of you know, I've been leasing a space from Iowa Ceramics Center for the months of March and April. Wednesday the 29th was my last day working in that big and glamorous space.

Why was I sad? I'll miss the size to spread out in, the tall ceilings, the full wall of south facing windows. I'll be happy to be at my home studio with Mr. Henry Boydog, all my supplies, no commute, and no packing a sack lunch... but the truth is things are feeling a bit cramped in the subterranean studio.

Isn't it funny how we can imagine things will be one way and then they're not? When I rented the space, I was worried I wouldn't get anything done. I saw myself wasting time talking to artists in the "The Cherry Building". Instead, I was all alone in a 3 story, former factory building turned ghost town...I was all alone...Who knew that ghost town would be a great place to weather out a pandemic?

The date for my solo show at Cedar Rapids Museum of Art has been pushed out...fingers crossed...to September. I've finished the installation wall thanks to the Iowa Ceramics Center. The rest of the work is ready except for a few bits of framing. That will have to wait until the framers are open again. Stay tuned...for future posts of date changes, receptions, talks, etc.

For the past week, I've been participating in a project called the #artistsupportpledge. The project is simple....each artist pledges to sell a pieces of art that cost no more than $200. When the artist reaches $1000 of sales, they pledge to buy another artist's work for $200. I'm very excited to announce so far I've sold three pieces. To read more about the project, and see the sold work, keep scrolling down.

Well...isn't it interesting to experience an important part of history? Just think, years from now, we'll talk about "The COVID-19 Pandemic of 2020". People will relay their personal stories. Folks who were kids at the time, will talk about how they couldn't go to school, play with their friends, and everyone was afraid of germs.

Over the next month, I hope that each and everyone of you is safe, healthy, and happy. I for one will be really excited to be out and about with other artists, family, and friends. In the meantime, I'll be working in the studio, taking a daily walk, wearing a mask, and quarantining my groceries in the truck of my car.

You?

Onward!

The Artist Support Pledge:

"Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many artists around the world have found themselves without work, teaching, technical support, and or gallery work. Art Festivals, exhibitions and sales have also disappeared.

In an attempt to help alleviate some of this stress, artist @matthewburrowsstudio has instigated the #artistsupportpledge on instagram.

The concept is a simple one....Each artist pledges to post art on social media to sell for no more than $200 each (not including shipping.) Anyone can buy the work. Every time an artist reaches $1000 of sales, they pledge to buy another artist's work for $200. This pledge to put 20% of our sales back into the art community is great, grassroots way to create a support net for artists and makers worldwide. As I write this, I'm realizing this isn't all about the art community. Putting money into the hands of artists will impact many businesses in the economy from; framers, art supply companies, galleries, museums, health services, grocery stores, hair stylists, utility companies, property taxes, income taxes...the list goes on and on. It's basically the same list every small business owner or any person.

Right now, I'm halfway to my first pledge goal of $1000. I'd like to have the opportunity to do more. My stretch goal is $2,000 in sales. (Can you tell I've worked in retail?)  If you've been thinking about buying a piece, and haven't now is a good time.

To see which pieces are left, go to this link and look for the tab #100 Day Project.

Thank you!
