COVID-19 Positive While Floxed

Dear <<First Name>>,

Today, Rachel Brummert, floxie activist, "Frankenwoman," filmmaker, and expert subject featured in 'Floxed' is taking over our Floxed Friday after somewhat recovering from COVID-19. Below is her experience and take on this virus:
_____________________________________________
When I got floxed back in 2006 by Levaquin, it took years to fully understand the gravity of what floxing was. Little was known about the wide-spread damage that fluoroquinolone antibiotics can cause when inappropriately prescribed. I felt alone, confused, and scared about the sudden onset of terrifying symptoms like spontaneous tendon ruptures, memory problems, severe joint pain, and peripheral, autonomic, and central nervous dysfunction. I didn’t understand what was happening to me, whether I would get better, or whether it would kill me.

Those of us who have weakened immune systems- whether due to floxing or by an autoimmune disease (or both)- worry constantly when an illness goes around because we can’t fight things off like healthy people can. Being active in infection prevention and patient safety, I thought I was doing all the right things to prevent contracting COVID-19.

Despite taking measures, I still caught the novel coronavirus. It is hell. It feels like déjà vu having sudden, confusing symptoms, which started on March 21. I had a high fever, crushing headaches, it felt like I had a compression band around my chest and it felt like I was drowning without water. Taking deep breaths hurt. I lost my sense of smell and taste. Nobody knows the full effects of what the virus can do to your body and that is a scary thought. I’ve recently heard that COVID-19 is causing even more dangerous symptoms in otherwise healthy people- just like floxing.

One of the medications suggested recently- hydrochloroquine- has proven ineffective for COVID-19 and is causing cardiac failure. I made the personal choice to decline it when it was offered to me at the emergency room. Not unlike fluoroquinolones, there are benefits and risks and both are pushed through the FDA and by the medical community before knowing what it is capable of or before proper testing is done.

I had COVID-19 for 6 weeks and I can’t help but wonder just how much damage the virus is doing to vital organs. It scares me just as much now as it did when I found out about the damage floxing causes because symptoms can sometimes be delayed. The fear of the unknown keeps me up at night.

Being floxed and having this highly contagious, potentially fatal virus at the same time is a double-whammy. Doubly scary. Doubly sneaky and insidious.

Rachel is currently running a GoFundMe to keep her floxie activism website up-and-running while she's furloughed from her job at the FDA. If you're interested in helping her out, the link is here.

In addition, I've been producing a documentary on COVID-19 in the meantime and if you're interested in seeing that trailer, the link is here.

Everyone, please stay safe and have a great weekend!
