Owe taxes? You now have until July to pay (or cut) them

If you owe taxes, due to the Coronavirus Relief you now have until July 15 to pay. also, you can possibly still cut your taxes for 2019 by contributing to an IRA by then- up to $6,000 (under age 50) and $7,000 if 50 or older. Keep in mind, however, that if you already have a retirement plan through work (which school employees do) that there are income limits as far as how much can be deducted. Contact us for more information and to see if you qualify.

Get your stimulus check yet? Save or spend it?

The CARES Act stimulus checks for $1,200 (individual) $2,400 (couple) started going out direct deposit at the end of April. In addition, you could receive an additional $500 per child under age 17. The money is tax free, which means you won't have to claim it as income. In the weeks to come direct deposits will continue followed by mailed checks. Also, if anyone over age 18 who didn't  file taxes  is also entitled to the $1,200. Go to  http://irs.gov for more information.

Need money for summer? Use your 403b

With school year as we know it basically over, it's time to start thinking about summer. In addition to being a time for relaxation and time with family, it can also be a stressful time with no income. For those not paid year-round summer can be difficult. Some set aside money each month out of their pay check; others work during the summer; while others simply have to try to get by on less.
Another consideration would be to use the loan provision built into your 403b to borrow from yourself during the summer. The advantages are reduced taxes, higher interest on your money, and the ability to build your retirement a lot faster. Also,  with the passage of the CARES Act, you are now able to borrow up to 100% of your cash value instead of the normal 50% if you or a family member has been directly or indirectly affected by COVID-19. If you're not already participating in the summer pay program using your 403b let us show you how and the benefits that you, too can receive.

...Need money this summer? Let us know
If you are planning on borrowing from your 403b for this summer please allow about 3-4 weeks for processing. In other words, if you need the funds by August 1 we would need to make the request by July 1.  Call or email us and we will let you know how much you have available.

Staying positive during the quarantine
In midst of the past six weeks of a lock down, quarantine, social isolation, whatever you want to call it...it's hard to stay positive not knowing when you'll be free again to go where you want, do what you enjoy and see who you want without wearing a mask and keeping a six-feet social distance. Many face anxiety or depression. Others experience both.  Depression and anxiety often go hand-in-hand. If we watch news every day and become inundated with negative news, we can't help but feel a bit anxious and depressed.
Here a few suggestions to make this time a little easier to deal with.

Focus on what you can control
Most of the things we worry about never happen and the things that do happen we usually have can't control. So, let's focus on what we can control. If we can't change what happens, we can at least change our reaction to it.

Limit your media intake
We all need to stay informed as to what's happening in the world, but not inundated. We should limit how much time we spend watching news, listening to the radio, and scrolling through social media. Surrounding yourself with infection rates and stories of hospitals being overcrowded and short on supplies can be too much.
Remember that people are still working to make it better

In spite of all the negative news, there is also plenty of good  taking place that we rarely hear about. Police officers shopping for the elderly, doctors coming out of retirement to lend a helping hand, and families sharing their food and toilet paper with those in need. Remind yourself that in spite of all the negative news there is plenty of good too.
Invest in something uplifting
Surrounding yourself with uplifting media, people, activities and thoughts can help encourage a more optimistic mindset, even in difficult times. Read a good book, watch an uplifting movie. Surround yourself with positive things.
Set a personal schedule
It's easy these days to sleep in and have no agenda or schedule of things to do each day.  Using your time wisely, sticking to a schedule, and being productive can help promote a sense of hope. Get outside, go for a walk. Schedule and prioritize things you've been meaning to do for months, but have put off.

Waite a minute
By Jim Waite
These past several weeks have been unlike any other in my lifetime. I remember as a kid watching old episodes of Twilight Zone. Rod Serling, the host, would introduce the show, with always ending the introduction with.."you have now crossed over into the Twilight Zone." Each old black-and-white episode would stretch your imagination into a place, time or event that was unimaginable and unbelievable. I feel like everyday for the past six weeks I've 'crossed over' into something between the Twilight Zone and the Bill Murray movie, Groundhog Day,  where every day feels the same. The COVID-19 has wreaked havoc around the globe. Many have died physically, which is bad, but I'm more concerned about those who are dying financially, emotionally and socially. With over 20 million people unemployed and millions of others "underemployed" due to business closures mandated because of this virus, many are trying to make ends meet the best they can. It can be weeks or months for many businesses to open again. For others they may be gone forever along with those they employed. The emotional and social toll this quarantine and 'social distancing' is taking on the human mind and psyche may take one months or years to recover. The media fans the flames of discontent and fear, unfortunately
Normally, May is a month for high school graduations. My daughter is a senior at Liberty and won't be able to experience her own graduation like I did back in 1977 at South High (see above photo). I picked up her cap and gown last week and thought to myself how we can have a special graduation for her? Yearbook signings, proms, year-end activities. Gone.
Sure, like anything else, there is good in every situation. People are outside more, walking dogs, running, kids riding bikes and drawing on sidewalks with chalk. With restaurants being closed for dine-in  many have reverted to dinner at home. With more time on our hands we've been able to whittle down somewhat that "To Do" list that we've been putting off. The other day I saw the following quote:
Everything will be okay.
Stay safe, remain clam and have faith.
We will all get through this.

Things will get better. Take time to enjoy time together. I know sometimes it may feel like you're playing a real-life version of Family Feud as sometimes too much togetherness may cause tensions to fly. Take time for yourself. Develop a new hobby, learn a new skill, try something you've always wanted to do, but didn't have the time. Send a distant family member, friend or neighbor a text or give them a call to let them know you're thinking of them. Drop off a box of food and household necessities on their doorstep. It's interesting how much we appreciate so much more those basic essentials that we took for granted before. Make every day the best, thus  making Groundhog Day a day you would look forward to repeating every day.

Get a pay raise? Shelter it from taxes

Several school districts have either approved or are in negotiations for pay increases for both classified and certificated employees. Depending on your pay, this could mean hundreds of extra dollars each month in addition to "retro" pay. Taxes will take a considerable portion of the pay raise, so why not add to your 403b, thus keeping your taxes low, earn high er interest, and build your retirement savings that much faster? Do you know a school employee who isn't contributing? Let us know and we can help.

Stock market crashes? you don't lose a dime!

With the volatility of the stock market, what if you could participate with the market and never lose a dime? The stock market has skyrocketed to record highs the past couple of years, then all of the sudden fallen to record lows. Over the past 24 years that I've been offering retirement plans no one has ever lost. Will Rogers once said "I'm not as concerned about the return on my investment as the return of my investment." Why not know that you'll be getting a certain amount when you retire rather than hoping you'll have a certain amount upon  retirement?  I've found over the years that most people want three things: 1) That their money is safe and secure, 2) that it will be there when they retire and 3)Be enough to live on- not worrying about outliving their money.

Earn a 5% interest bonus on each deposit for 8 years!

If you're not already getting a 5% interest bonus on your money, now may be the time to start. Introducing the Fit Rewards Growth which credits you a 5% interest bonus on each deposit you make into your 403b, IRA ,ROTH, or SEP IRA. You will also be credited additional interest based on the S&P 500 and a fixed interest account.

It's time to get a life

Recently I was talking to a client and she asked if I offer life insurance. I thought by now everyone would know that in addition to offering 403b's, IRA's, Roth IRA's and other savings plans for the past 24 years that yes, we have also offered life insurance. Life insurance these days not only offers a tax-free death benefit to your family upon your death, but also tax-free retirement income to you while you live! In addition, it includes long-term care and critical illness (heart attack, cancer, stroke, etc.) benefits at no extra charge!
In addition, we also offer low-rate dental insurance for those who are retired, self-employed or simply looking for something better.   Here is the website for California Dental go to http://caldental.net
Complete the online enrollment under "enroll now" at the bottom of the page. Be sure to enter agent #003551. You can also view the benefits, coverage and providers. Keep in mind you'll have to use one dental insurance or the other; generally both won't pay. If you have any questions please let me know.

Congratulations Class of 2020 Graduates!
